John Kerry’s Wonderful Adventures

By Sher Zieve
Aug 19, 2004

With all of the alternative press flak over John Kerry’s Cambodian 1968 “Date-Gate” (the story in which Mr. Kerry blames President Nixon for sending him to Cambodia at Christmas…before Nixon had taken office), I had understood that his campaign folks had not only backed away from it but, had gone to bed and pulled the covers over their heads. But…NO! In yesterday’s Boston Globe, Michael Kranish offers, yet, a new explanation from Kerry spokesman Michael Meehan. Meehan states: "During John Kerry's service in Vietnam, many times he was on or near the Cambodian border and on one occasion crossed into Cambodia at the request of members of a special operations group operating out of Ha Tien." This new account of Kerry’s Wonderful Adventures, into the fray of Cambodia, tells of Mr. Kerry’s dropping off Special Ops Forces. So, now Kerry was “on or near” the Cambodian border” and, at least once, “crossed into Cambodia” at the request of a Special Ops group? One of his boat-mates (and a Kerry supporter), James Wasser, said he believes they were “very very close” but, that it was “hard to tell” as there weren’t any signs. Will the next excerpt tell us there were signs? Michael Medeiros, another of Kerry’s mates and Kerry supporter, said that he “vividly” recalls chasing an enemy to the Cambodian border but, that they didn’t go beyond that point. As with Kerry’s previous story, is this one seared into Mr. Mederios’ memory, too? Yet another of Mr. Kerry’s crew mates, Steven Gardner who is not a Kerry supporter, advises that he was with Kerry on Christmas Eve 1968 and they were never closer than 50 miles from Cambodia.

These “Kerry’s Cambodia” stories are developing more legs than a centipede. I’ve even heard one that places Kerry with the Navy Seals. Or was that the Special Ops group? There’s another, which I wrote about, in which Kerry only changes the date from Christmas 1968 to January 1969 (so that he can still “nail” President Nixon?). It’s getting pretty confusing out there. What I cannot figure out is why the man doesn’t drop all these versions, altogether. It sure appears that these alternate versions of Kerry’s history are being floated to see which one the public will buy. Not good, Mr. Kerry. I, for one, don’t buy any of them.

The only way I’ll be able to make any sense of the substitute Kerry histories (or as Howard Dean might say “theories”), is when I finally learn that they will appear in the new Kerry Comic Book series. Maybe that’s why they’re putting all of the different versions out there… to figure out which story line works. Yeah, that’s the ticket! Title: “Kerry in Cambodia… One Man’s Searing Crusade”?
