Zeus' Servant

By Jim Cripps
Aug 13, 2004

With great anticipation, I looked to the heavens to watch the Perseid meteor shower last night. Unfortunately, I saw nothing, which is typical of astral events. And I've been thinking about why this type of phenomenon is always absent from sight.

Eons ago, just before the 1970s, people looked up into the sky and wondered, "Why does the Sun (or a foreign variant of that name), roll across the sky?" "Why does its sister, the Moon, come out at night?" "Why does it hurt when I do this?" So, when they failed to use their brains, they came up with a simple solution; God/s. With good copy, and a brief bio, a god could be created to explain anything, including the Perseids, which have been recorded as early as two millenia ago, and most likely seen long before then. Prevailing belief was, that Perseus is immortalized in the stars, and the Perseids (as observers say, its parent is comet Swift-Tuttle), emanate from him. This is the radius of the Perseids, debris blown off by the Sun's cosmic rays. Descendants of Perseus were also called Perseids. Isn't that interesting? So, it's this son of a god, a man of god-like skills, whose offspring blanket the sky occasionally.

Last night, I had hoped to bath in this wonderful celestial play, yet it was not to be. The 'Rays of Perseus' are below my horizon. And who do you think I blame? The same ones that created it all, and taunt me now. The Gods. They pull my strings, and then cut them loose.

I am just a plaything.
