Aug 6, 2004 In a letter sent yesterday (en masse) to television stations across the country, Marc Erik Alias (General Counsel Kerry-Edwards 2004) and Joseph Sandler (General Counsel Democratic National Committee) have issued a not-so-veiled threat to any television station that runs the “Swiftboat Veterans For Truth” advertisement. Signed by both attorneys, a portion of the letter states: “The statements made by these phony ‘crewmates’ and ‘doctor’ who appear in the advertisement are also totally, demonstrably and unequivocally false, and libelous.” The [named] attorneys also go on to state: “Moreover, as a licensee, you have an overriding duty to ‘protect the public from false, misleading and deceptive advertising” and “under these circumstances, your station may not responsibly air this advertisement.” First, one of the major contentions of [these] attorneys is that the Swiftboat veterans, who appear in the ad, were not “physically” on the boat with Kerry. My question is “So what?” Swiftboats are not large vessels and, apparently, were frequently side-by-side with Kerry’s boat. From what I have been able to ascertain, the credentials of the Swiftboat Vets (who appear in this ad) are impeccable and what they have said are factual accounts of what transpired. Second, is this what we have to look forward to from a Kerry presidency? Threats, intimidation, hidden documents (Kerry still refuses to release his military service documents) and character assassinations (the Kerry campaign and the DNC appear to be waging war on the truth) seem to be the mainstay of the Kerry campaign. Bear in mind, these Swiftboat Veterans served WITH Kerry, not UNDER him. They have never stated anything else. As I see it, John Kerry and his minions have become an increasingly scary bunch. Do you remember reading about a Russian leader who began his rise to absolute power with similar tactics? I do… ------------ About the author: Sher Zieve has a degree in Journalism, appeared on the CBS program "Mysteries of the Millenium", has been included in "Who's Who in the West", "Who's Who in the US" and "Who's Who in Entertainment".
