Random Acts of Kindness
Apr 17, 2004

In today’s society we are moving away from each other. Children wear bruises and forget to laugh. They are used and abused beyond our imagination. They learn life in the streets. You can see distrust peoples faces. This is not just post 9/11. I noticed this long ago. People are sleeping under train trusses with plastic bags for protection. They push their worldly belongings in a shopping cart or in a garbage bag slung over their shoulder. Children are killing each other. Mothers are murdering their children. CEO’s are stealing people’s life savings for personal gain.

Despair and cynicism spin around our minds like a piece of paper swirling around in the wind. We are not moving toward anything. We are receding away. Away from what we are afraid of. Away from poverty, away from road rage, homelessness, drive-by shootings, car jackings, AIDS, drug wars, gangs, and most importantly, each other.

When was the last time you did a random act of kindness? Random acts of kindness are those little things you do because your soul invites you to do so. When you give from the heart, it is not to get anything back. There is no owing or being owed. Have you ever paid for someone’s toll on a toll road? Or put money in a parting meter when you notice it is about to expire? Given a homeless person a warm pair of gloves or something to eat? Have you ever helped someone who looked lost? I mean personally doing this. I don’t mean putting a few cans of food into a big barrel in a grocery store, putting a pair of gloves on an office Christmas tree or taken a new toy to the fire department as a donation during the holidays. Those are wonderful acts but they are not personal acts of kindness.

Many of us try to fulfill our obligations in life by being responsible parents, help our colleagues, support our families, and do our share at home, in our communities and at work. These deeds are what are expected of us. We are comfortable with this life. People don’t like to step out of our comfort zone. It is when we step outside of the arena of our normal circumstances, when we move beyond the familiar emotional boundaries of our lives that our kindness, too, moves beyond the routine and enters a realm of the extraordinary. Instead of being responsible good deeds, they become embodiments of compassion. Don’t we all need compassion in our lives especially during these difficult times called life?

Can you imagine what would happen if there was an outbreak of random acts of kindness in the world? I believe people can make a difference by very simple heartfelt gestures toward one another.
