Terrence Dean Astleford AKA KNIGHTWARP

The Living Cup
Apr 11, 2004

Sam Knightwarp was out looking for yard sales on a bright Saturday morning. He loved looking for strange and new things. He often found things that were either rare or hard to find. Like the time he found an antique iron. He got it home and tried to use the thing. Problem is every time he tried to iron something it got cold. He would plug it in and check to see if it were hot. He heard the sizzle as he touched a wet finger to it. As soon as he touched anything with it, it would get as cold as ice. So he ended up putting in his garage of useless junk that has no purpose in life.

It just so happened that on this particular day, he was looking for something different. Something you can’t find anywhere else. And he did. He found this unique cup. It was ugly enough to be beautiful. He loved it. When he went to pay for it, he was told there was something wrong with it.

“What do you mean something is wrong with it?”

] “Well, it’s just different. You’ll see”, the lady says.

“Okay. I’m interested now. I’ll take it”.

“It’s yours. It is something that can’t be sold but has to be given away and accepted freely”, she replies.

“You mean it’s free?”

“Yeah. Totally free and yours for the taking” as a gleam comes into her eyes.

Smiling to himself, he leaves and takes the cup with him. He is happy he found something different and new for his collection. He thinks to himself, this will be perfect for my coffee in the morning. Going home, he takes the cup in and washes it. He puts it into his cupboard and does his normal daily things he usually does. Going to bed that night, he hears a strange noise coming from downstairs. Going down he takes a look see as he turns lights on. The noise stops and he hears nothing. Thinking he was hearing things, he turns the lights back off and goes back to bed.

He tosses and turns all night thinking he hears noises from downstairs. After having gone down 5 times and finding nothing, he just ignored it. Waking up, he goes downstairs and brews a pot of coffee. Taking his new cup down, he puts in some cream and sugar as per his taste. Doing his morning things, he comes back and picks the coffee pot up. As he starts to pour the coffee into the cup a few drops get into the cup and the rest falls on the counter. Thinking he must have moved the pot by accident, he cleans the mess up and tries again.

This time he watches and sees the cup move away from the hot coffee. And coffee once again splatters on the counter. Putting one hand on the cup and the other holding the pot, he tries again. But the cup is too powerful for him to hold steady. It is like it has a mind of its own. It is almost as if the cup doesn’t like hot things and it hurts it. Trying once more, it does the same thing. “That’s it. You’re going to have coffee in you if it’s the last thing that happens”.

He ends up pouring the entire contents of the pot on the counter. Throwing the cup into the sink he swears he hears an ouch. “I can’t believe this. A cup with feeling’s”, he says to no one. Then he hears a tiny voice saying that if he wants to use the cup, he better offer it something warm not hot and never cold. It was on this day that he gave up on yard sales. He had enough useless junk and didn’t need any more. Taking the cup to his collection of stuff in the garage, the entire collection falls on him and kills him. Now all these things are being sold in goodwill stores nationwide. So beware. The cup you buy may not like you. Or the iron that you so desperately needed won’t work for you. And if you happen to get all the things in his collection, you may end up with the same fate as Sam did. Consumer beware of odd and different things you can’t find anywhere else. And never, ever put these things together in a dark and dreary place.

Sam’s tombstone reads, “If it doesn’t kill you, you haven’t collected enough”.
