The Three R's!

President Bush put into effect the ‘No Child Left Behind’ education reform. Many issues have occurred from this reform including making elementary school focus more on the basics than on art, geography, history, and foreign languages. In the past, the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic was the most important in the schools. As time advanced, the need for other classes to be incorporated into the curriculum came about. The social studies areas in the past have been a very important part of the school systems. Now it is realized in President Bush’s reform, that the basics are the most important and must be taught to the students before they can learn the other aspects.

Does the ‘No Child Left Behind’ take away more than it gives to the student? In order to answer this question, a survey given to four states, New Mexico, New York, Indiana, and Maryland by the Council for Basic Education concluded a majority of teachers were spending more time on reading, writing, and math. The survey also summed up that there was a decrease in minority students for social study class time.

The reform does not conform to every parent or child’s need but tries to place the child in front and learn the basics before they learn other subjects.

As stated in an article by the U.S. Education Department spokeswomen, Susan Aspey, she said, “If you can’t read, then you can’t learn.”

In my opinion she is right because the school system has gotten completely away from the basics and this reform sends a message that they are important in the school setting and to the future education on the students.

Do we care? You bet we do if you are a parent!
