Apr 26, 2004 What happened to that familiar saying that " It's not whats outside but inside that counts"? We are living in a time when plastic surgery is a routine proceedure. People are being pulled, pushed, tucked and lifted more than ever. Once upon a time, only women reaching a mid-life crisis considered "going under the knife". Today, young girls, men and even young boys are seeking plastic surgery. We are living in a society that is more concerned with looks than character and personality. This is not to suggest that one can't have both, brains and beauty. As a whole we are fixated on the so called, beautiful people. Our first impression of them has absolutely nothing to do with their I.Q. or well rounded conversation. Instead, we are preoccupied with how they look. I feel the media has played a significant role in this sudden trend. The new reality shows that offer makeovers, music videos, beauty magazines and advertisements promoting the lastest technology which can perform non-invasive, quick and affordable proceedures. When will we learn to be satisfied with ourselves? Sure, each of us can look in the mirror and find one thing or maybe two that isn't perfect, but so what? We have to learn to embrace our imperfections and realize that God or a higher power made us all unique and special in some way. ------------ About the author Cynthia Mewborn: I live in Brooklyn New York and work in the field of Surgical Pathology.
