Apr 6, 2004 It is amazing to see the amount of money that people are willing to pay at the pet store when trying to expand their family! It is even more amazing when there are millions of animals abandoned annually, ending up at the pound behind bars as if they have committed some infamous crime when all they were guilty of, was not being able to make themselves loved enough. The ones that end up at the pound are the most unfortunate ones since they get euthanized four days after their arrival if no one is willing to adopt them, regardless of their age or health. Somteimes, these animals get picked up by cosmetic companies who wish to do testing or research on them, without caring for their lives or the consequences of their study. Some animal lovers make it a habit to visit the pound every now and then, they pay a little fee which covers the expenses endured by the pound, they get a couple of animals out and place them with foster families, or in shelters where they will not be euthanized. Now doesn't this option sound a lot better? Have you ever visited the pound? It is the saddest place I've ever been to; not to mention that the animals endure high stress due to their confinement. Now I can understand that one wouldn't want to go through the trouble of saving an animal from the pound, paying a fee jsut to place the poor unwanted thing in a shelter or foster care, but why can't people stop paying crazy prices at the pet store and go save a puppy or kitten from their iron barred prison where dogs are howling miserably and cats are clinging to their fences, hoping to be seen or heard? One shocking fact is that people adopt black kittens or cats for Halloween and then they just abandon them all over again, just because they are said to be bad luck. Another shocking fact is that some people who already have cats, and who don't want anymore, but don't wish to pay the cost for spaying or neutering them, just wait for the kittens to be born and drown them! Haven't these people heard of pet adoptions? Nowadays, with all the organizations made available and willing to take care of unwanted animals, people have no excuses for not treating these defenseless creatures right. If you want a pet, save one from the pound; if for whatever reason you wish to let go of yours, place it up for adoption; if you don't want to be bothered with placing your pet for adoption, give it to a shelter and they will take care of it for you; if you want a black cat for Halloween, borrow your friend's cat for the day, or just get a stuffed one! And finally if you don't want pets but you feel that you can help, rescue one from the pound and place it in a shelter where dedicated people have given their time to find these animals a home and a family. ------------ Email Regine Tamba: reginetamba14@aol.com Tell a friend about this site! ------------ |
