A Difference of Opinions

By Patrie Davis
Apr 23, 2004

Generally speaking, society amuses me. I love sitting back and watching people, or listening to them but today’s pet peeve with human kind is their minds. Or in some cases the lack of such a thing. While reading a review for a fantasy novel of Amazon.com, I saw that 4 out of 5 reviewers on the first page gave the book one star out of five due to heavy amounts of graphic sex and violence and a demeaning portrayal of women. It was the fifth review that inspired me to put pen to paper, (or finger to keyboard as the case may be).

This fifth reviewer gave the book four out of five stars and started the review saying, “Despite the heavy sex and violence.” This is where we insert a standard eye roll. I scanned the rest of the review where the book’s seemingly only fan justified all of its shortcomings. Then at the end the reviewer wrote the single set of words that I loathe more than any other. “Please don’t hate a book out of ignorance and close- mindedness; broaden your horizons.”

Oh, well now I understand everything. The other few reviewers didn’t have a problem with the sex and violence like they said. Instead they were just ignorant and close-minded. Is it just me, or does it seem like the standard response when people disagree with you is, “you’re stupid?” It sure does seem like that to me. In a world where everyone seems to preach free speech, we all seem to have a major problem with differing opinions.

I have my own opinions on certain things and am perfectly willing to debate them like a civil human being but I will never tell someone they’re ignorant for having a certain belief unless it infringes on the rights of others. I just find it amusing that the reviewer considers everyone else ignorant and close-minded for not choosing to read a book full of needless sex and violence.

This person also considers accepting this content as broadening their horizons. I suppose that could be true in some context of the term but no one should have to compromise their morals to “broaden their horizons.”

I am extremely anti-drug, having never done them and never intending on trying them and during most debates with drug users or supporters, the ultimate question comes up. “If you’ve never tried them, how can you knock them?”

I do not have to shoot myself in the foot to know that it is a stupid thing to do. Realize that people are going to have opinions that differ from your own and that by calling them ignorant or close- minded, you are showing your own true colors.
