Apr 2, 2004 I was watching the Disney channel while baby-sitting a nine-year-old girl I know when a Kidz Bop CD collection commercial came on. The list of songs that little children were singing included Hey Ya by OutKast, Alive by P.O.D. and Boys and Girls by Good Charlotte. True, these are all cool songs, I enjoy them, but are they really suitable for preteens? I know the lyrics in Hey Ya should be unsuitable for preteens, sex and ignoring your parents are not ideas we should be planting in childrens’ heads that early, they’ll pick up on them soon enough as it is. I try not to press my morals on to other people, but I can’t help but feel that maybe come censorship in music wouldn’t be such a bad idea. This little girl I baby-sit for, who I’ll call Paige, isn’t allowed to watch The Simpsons because of questionable content, but she has LimpBiskit and KidRock playing constantly. I do not believe that video games and music are the main reason for violence in children, however I do know that children use music as a basic roll model for their behavior. So maybe we should watch what kids listen to. ------------ Email Catherine Stone: rumpleteaser0697@yahoo.com Tell a friend about this site! ------------ |
