May 31, 2003 A humorous story appeared on strategypage.com, complete with pictures, relating the tale of a meeting between a Polar Bear and a US Navy submarine that had been patrolling Arctic waters. It seems the sub came up far enough to poke its rear rudder and its sail through the ice and drew the attention of the bear. The pictures taken from the periscope cam tell the tale. The bear walks around the rudder, puzzled, and then attacks. Perhaps it hopes it has found a new dietary supplement. But the submarines tail is inedible and the disgruntled bear is left to stare at the strange and unidentifiable object. I can imagine the story he takes home to Mama Bear. How he struggled with a strange new foe and rendered it helpless. Or, the heroic discovery of a new kind of dark ice that could not be chewed! One thing that we know for certain, the bear does not and cannot have a reasonable concept of a submarine. It is beyond his comprehension. This is so very much like man and God. We see hints of God in the sky, the sun, our fellow man, nature, mathematics and so on. Gods creation gives us a glimpse of who He is, but He is so beyond our experience that we truly cannot comprehend. Very often we attack God or deny His existence. But this has less effect on His power and glory than a Polar Bear biting on the armored hull of a sub. Most of us take a good look at what we can observe of God. Some of us go on the attack, seeking to eliminate Him from our society. Some remain befuddled and give up on the idea of God altogether. But there is a reward to those who truly wish to know. There is much about God that can be grasped. It seems that the majority of scientists and philosophers of the last century have mightily struggled to eliminate God from the picture. The faulty assumptions of evolutionary science are continually exposed to be canards. Most scientists now are admitting that Intelligent Design is the only answer to the creation of life and the construction of living creatures. So they labor now to find a designer other than God. Communism was a glorious hope for atheists. It has proven to be a failure. Humanism is our national religion. Situational ethics are taught in the school system. Many educators now have found how morally bankrupt so many of our young people have become. Unlike a bear, we can read and write and comprehend abstract concepts. While God is too different from us to be revealed to us, He wants us to understand Him within the framework of our own limitations. There is the Bible, offered to man that he might better understand God and life and living. There is the call of Gods Spirit to the very depth of our being where we somehow know that our destination should be eternity. Perhaps we all feel like a Polar Bear encountering a submarine at some point in our lives. Perhaps you feel a bit that way right now. My hope is that you will neither fear nor hate that which you do not understand. For I believe that if you approach God with open mind and open heart, He will reveal enough of Himself to change your entire life for the better. ------------ About the author: Erstwhile gym-rat, former independent driven by disgust for the Democratic Party into the arms of the Republicans, current parent and expert at puns, jokes that make people groan and eating Debbie's cooking.
