Cuban Olympic Swim Team
May 15, 2003

This morning I saw Cubans trying to swim to the United States. It’s got to be about a hundred and fifty miles. I cannot believe that in the great moment of Castro’s humanitarian history that his supporter have been so silent. These guys that are swimming were part of the great Cuban Olympic team, right? This has to be what Danny Glover and Nobel Peace Prize Jimmy Carter mean when they say the Castro is a great man. Isn’t in Castro name that these athletes are displaying their nationalistic loyalty by trying to swim all the way around the world?

Wait a minute, I just saw the U.S. Coast Guard scooping Cubans out of the gulf. What can this mean? Must be another example of the ever-evil U.S. maintaining the supremacy in the area of long distance swimming by hampering the efforts of these happy Cubans? I’m more than a little confused because these Olympians are hugging the Coast Guard and waving to the camera?

I think Danny and Jimmy have misled me. These people are trying to escape the friendly, and fashionable, Castro. But where are Jimmy and Danny? Couldn’t they at least go down there and pass out some lifejackets and sunscreen?

Jimmy?

Danny?

You guys out there?

I think that I know what reason they would give for these desperate refugees. They are desperate because of the sanctions the U.S. still has against Cuba. Which, since they are still in place, must also be the fault of President Bush. They will simply ignore that the Carter didn’t lift the ban during his “Peanuts for Peace” presidency. But then again, if Castro were such a great man, why would they be fleeing to us, the very people who hold those sanctions against them?

The answer is obvious. The Cuban government mike think of us as capitalists pigs, and their people may agree, but they still see a great many more opportunities here than on their island. Who can blame them when the average monthly income in Cuba is ten dollars. By that standard, even those on welfare in the U.S. must seem rich. Or imagine making eight dollars an hour. They come here for opportunity. Would any of us do anything different?

It is very easy to be glib about the dunderheaded hypocrisy of Glover and Carter. It is another thing to ignore the will of these people. I cannot help but remember Ellian Gonzales and his mother, who died, trying to get to our shores. Only to have the entire journey and Ellian’s mother’s life be completely dismissed by the great sympathetic left. They booted the poor kid back to Castro, used armed guards to do it, and yet the left sat by quietly.

Why is this outrageous? First, the California left have tried to give illegal aliens free access to healthcare, admission to state schools, and have wanted to streamline immigration. But they have no sympathy for Ellian. Why? I think that there are two main reasons. First, the Clinton administration, and liberal in general, don’t have the backbone to stand by their ideas in any kind of logical way. For them, all things are relative, they have their principles but are not bothered at all by going against those ideals. The best example of this is the Mexican aliens. They need help because they are the same people who are cleaning the homes of the Hollywood elite and B actors, like Mr. Glover. These Mexican aliens are also working in agriculture through out the south, Mr. Carter. The second reason is a little less obvious. Castro is a Communist. There are voices among the left, and those in Hollyweird, who think that Communism and its prettier sister Socialism, are the direction of the future. The left is simply not going to be complicit in making their favorite political mascot look like a broken dictatorship.

It is not the difference of ideas that is dangerous. But we must all be cautious of intellectual dishonesty.
