Mar 20, 2003 Intramural Sports: A Means of Regaining Your Love for the Game In College By now you probably realize that the shift from high school to college is not always made along the smoothest of surfaces. One is forced to leave all of their safety nets and securities at home and venture out into the abyss. College forces you to remove yourself from everyone and everything around you that made your life so comfortable and simple. This baptism by fire could potentially scald even those with the toughest of skins. Perhaps one of the toughest transitions to make between college and high school is for those individuals who played sports, but were not recruited to play at the intercollegiate level. The transition from participating in athletics to not is often a very tough one for many college students. There is often a void left in the life of an athlete when they are no longer able to participate in the activity, or activities that were once such an integral part of their lives. After being successful at the high school level, there is a period of acceptance that every athlete must go through if they will not be playing at the next level. Students miss the camaraderie of sports and the time that they spent together with all their teammates. They miss the opportunity to compete against other athletes and the rivalries they had formed while still in high school. They miss the sweet feeling of victory while projecting a sour agony of defeat on their opponents. They miss every aspect of participating in their respective sports while in high school. It would be a great travesty if this void could never be filled for those individuals who had as large a share of heart as others, but were perhaps not blessed with an equal portion of skill. So college kids should just give up on all of the love they had for sports in high school as soon as they begin to receive their acceptance letters from colleges right? Wrong, there is a place for avid sports fans to dwell in college. Its a place where they can regain that lost glory. Its a place where people share the same love of sports that they do. Its a place where the competition is stiff, but the players still play for the love of game and pure fun. This place is on the courts of college intramural sports. It provides an avenue for ex high school stars to stay in shape and to still compete at a high level. You wont get any endorsements or move on to professional sports, but you will be able to play the game you love more than anything else. People just as enthusiastic about sports will surround you, and you will be able to rekindle the fire of your competitive desire. Intramural sports serves as an answer to the age-old question of, is my athletic career over once I attend college? So strap on those tennis shoes, stretch out those old muscles and get ready to take it to the court and showcase your talents. There is a place for you and that place is on the battlefield of intramural sports. About the author: Jason Trace is a senior at Michigan State University who is majoring in English.
