Link Between Virus And Weight Gain?

By Robert Paul Reyes
Mar. 18, 2006

Folks who are overweight are armed with a boatload of excuses: It's in my genes; I have a thyroid problem, I'm too fat to exercise, I was abducted by aliens and implanted with a device that gives me an uncontrollable appetite....

Now they have one more excuse, according to "Scientific American.com", "a new study suggests that certain cases of obesity are contagious. Certain strains of human and avian adenoviruses responsible for ailments ranging from chest colds to pink eye -- actually make individuals build up more fat cells".

I realize that not all hefty people are gluttons, there are legitimate medical reasons why some individuals are overweight, this essay is for those of us who are too lazy to lose those few extra pounds.

I'm not a scientist, I don't know the nucleus of an atom from a nuclear bomb, but why don't these adenoviruses cause an outbreak of obesity in refugee camps? Why are morbidly obese people found in communities with ready access to Ding Dongs, Doritos and Double Whoppers?

I can imagine my rotund sister saying to one of her daughters, I've come down with this adenovirus, it's making me hungry, pass me another donut.

Even if the results of the study are valid, why release them to a public that is ready to grasp at any excuse to supersize every meal? Don't those scientists have a conscience, I would have released the results to a media outlet that nobody listens to -- say MSNBC?

There is one good aspect about this study, parents can use it to scare their teens, obsessed with body image, into washing their hands. "Wash your hands Jenny, you don't want to catch an adenovirus and balloon like Oprah Winfrey".
