V For Vendetta Movie Review

By Nicholas Olson
Mar. 17, 2006

If you are a liberal, or fighter for the rights of people to have freedom of choice, speech, religion, whatnot, this is a movie for you. If you are a conservative, well, sorry but this is kind of your wake up call.

Brought to us by the creators of the Matrix series, this is a comic book story brought to life by the excellent acting of Hugo Weaving (The Matrix trilogy, The Lord of the Rings) and Natalie Portman (Star Wars, The Professional).

The movie follows the struggle of one man, self-named "V," who is determined to topple the futuristic regime of the British empire. A high chancellor, played by John Hurt, in a Big Brother look, tries to reign the Brits by striking fear into the hearts of the masses by keeping them safe by controlling what they watch, what they read and how they think.

But one person, V, sends a message to the populace that he will be coming on the 5th of November, to commemorate the anniversary of Guy Faulks attempt to blow up parliament in 1600. Once he serves notice, the powers that be go looking for V in an attempt to stop the event.

The story is well told throughout and does not cheese out on the audience. The acting is not over the top nor does the dialog let the viewer down. After the last few Matrix movies, viewers probably expect to find a movie full of CGI effects and action scenes to rival any modern flick but it is more subtle. Instead the movie relies on substance to bring the story to its conclusion.

Without giving anything away, the movie is great on every level. The acting is more than competent and the cinematography is beautiful. Kudos go to Weaving for his part as V. It is no secret that Weaving does not come out of the mask for the entirety of the movie.
