Mar. 15, 2006 Announced on March 14, 2006, Isaac Hayes announced he will no longer lend his voice talents to the animated show "South Park" as the character of "Chef." This news comes as a shock to many fans of the show. After providing the voice of "Chef" for 150 episodes in the 10 years that South Park has been on the air and after mocking many religions, Hayes left after an episode was shot that poked fun of Scientology. Matt Stone, co-creator of the show, released a statement on southparkstudios.com that to the effect states that Hayes leaving the show has more to do with Hayes' own prejudices and double standards when it comes to making fun of other religions but when it came to Scientology's turn to be mocked by the great ones, Hayes left. Many fans are now wondering what this means for the show, but the creators and producers will handle this, I am sure. Now for my take on this issue. I think that Isaac Hayes is being two-faced about the whole situation. He didn't have problems picking on Muslims or the Jewish faith, but one episode about the Church of Scientology and he has to leave. Isn't that a double standard? What hypocrisy, a savage hypocrisy has Mr. Hayes pulled on a bunch of South Park Fans that have come to love and expect the very bad imitations of celebrities and religions. Who is showing the most intolerance and bigotry? Isaac Hayes, whom has cashed checks for his voice-over talents? Or the show’s creators, writers and producers to whom nothing is sacred or revered to make an episode out of? To me, I believe it is Mr. Hayes that is being over the top on this one folks. “Chef” has been a staple of the show since the pilot episode. Chef is the one that the four boys go to when they cannot get an answer out of their parents about issues. I would love to see Mr. Hayes change his mind and come back to the voice of Chef. But the harsh words being put out in the press by him and by the creators of South Park, nothing is going to bring Chef back and they will have to create a new character. ------------ About the author: Kaycee Nilson has completed her first novel, "Night Falls on Chicago."
