The Darfur Genocide Continues

By Samuel Sandbaugh
Mar. 14, 2006

As much as people prefer to ignore the genocide occurring in Darfur, Sudan, Ann Curry of NBC News is not ignoring the latest developments as more than 200,000 refugees have now entered the neighboring country of Chad. SEE: “Darfur violence spills into neighboring Chad” (13.03.2006)

The Janjaweed (Arab militia) continues their program of destruction and death, supported by the Sudanese government. They have ignored the border between Chad and the Sudan, attacking the refugee camps to continue the slaughter. The President of Chad is asking the world community for help and he supports any action from foreign armies to stop the killing.

This is something the Sudanese will not agree to. They have permitted a small and ineffective United Nations contingent of so-called “peacekeepers” to “monitor” the situation. The Sudan insists that any troops sent to the area must be from African nations. This is nothing more than another Islamic dictatorship trying to keep the playing field to their advantage. If American or British troops take up positions in Chad, the killing will be stopped. Sudan wants the complete elimination of the non-Arab population of Darfur.

The American President has not been afraid to use the term “genocide” for what is occurring in the Sudan and Chad. There have been no official rebuttals of the term as most are in agreement this is a replay of what happened in Rwanda in the ‘90s. There have been countless hours of talk and diplomatic initiative, but the Sudan continues to ignore the genocide with the help of China which refuses to support any kind of sanctions against a nation considered an ally.

The president of Chad is not asking for more talk. Having been accused of assisting the Arab militias he is now calling for international action. He is also willing to permit a foreign military presence that is capable of stopping the Janjiweed and their supporters. Hundreds of thousands of people have been driven from their homelands. These people are dying from starvation and exposure to the elements. They have been visited by the international press, and politicians from several western nations. All the niceties have been spoken and many promises have been made and still people die. The Sudanese government must be brought to account.

Almost a million souls were destroyed in the Rwanda genocide, and we are facing the same numbers in the Sudan and Chad. No one intervened in Rwanda. No one seems to care in the current matter.

Exacerbating an already deadly situation, this whole area of Northern Africa is experiencing drought and famine. Many of the countries bordering the Sahara have been asking food and other humanitarian aid from the United Nations. Thousands are dead from starvation every day. Everyone agrees the need is great and should be met.

Not so these deaths from deliberate murder. Talk and negotiation is the preferred approach. Talk and negotiation got a 12 year reprieve for Saddam Hussein and he was able to murder hundreds of thousands while the United Nations fiddled with sanctions and resolutions. Is this what we face in the Sudan? How do you apologize to the dead?
