![]() By Ken Hughes Mar. 11, 2006 George Bush came to Washington riding a White Horse he called “Civility” it only took liberals a few weeks to eat his horse and pick at the bones for the next five years. Dubai agreed to take a backdoor into the American port system. Meaning they will finance a pseudo-American company probably incorporated in one of those Caribbean Island Nations and accomplish exactly what they set out to do in the first place. There’s no politics in Dubai, so they don’t have to satisfy a liberal segment of their population. The entire region is an acculturation of family owned dictatorships. Arab Nomads who settled down and set up shop in the oil rich Middle East. Their treasure pouches will no longer hold the oil money so they must invest, where better than with the money grubbing Infidels. The Media found something that was too good not to report. Lower level bureaucrats have been negotiating deals with foreign companies and countries for years. Most of the time presidents never know what’s in them. In the past 20 years a hundred port deals have been struck with no mention by the media. In this case Arab Muslims were involved and that was just too good to pass up. It had all the components for a juicy evening news story. It’s for sure the president was blindsided. The natural response by the president would be to say “Tell me it isn’t so.” Fortunately cooler heads turned this into a wining situation for the president. Dubai graciously and symbolically backed out of the deal. Leaving loudmouthed liberals like Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton scratching their nummies asking “Which way did they go George..??” The president looks as if he had compromised and Republicans showed they could stand up to the president when they disagreed. The only losers were Democrats for having another set of allegations go south down the toilet. There’s no doubt the terminal leases will go through as planned. The names will be different but the players will be the same. America’s port security will improve due to the attention this debate created. The most effective port security is to catch things where the gun is loaded not where the bullets come out. The presumption sea ports are our most vulnerable soft spots is ludicrous. Logistics are far too cumbersome to make them valuable to terrorists as a weapon. As I went around this week asking questions from people I came in contact with. I ask if the Dubai port leases were a serious issue. Some people said if it disrupted the economy in any way they would be concerned. Most didn’t care and thought it was just politics as usual. There is an issue that’s beginning to disturb the people I talk with. They’re awaiting a stratigy from Democrats, people want to know the issues and Democrats aren’t giving them answers. They’re told Democrats can do better but their not told how. Democrats say they want to redeploy the troops just outside of Iraq and let Iraqis handle their own security. Just outside being where, Syria, Iran, Jordon, Saudi Arabia or perhaps they plan to put 100 thousand troops on ships in the Persian Gulf. Its stupid statements like this that make the public ask why elect Democrats? Until and unless Democrats can come up with something more coherent than Bush bashing they’re on a losing path to Congress come November. ------------ About the author: Ken Hughes is a retired businessman, who’s traveled extensively, observed much and learned much.
