The UAE Ports Deal - The Carter/Clinton Follies

By Michael John McCrae
Mar. 11, 2006

The UAE is wise. They have withdrawn from the ports deal because those crazy American politicians were making them all out to be terrorists. Since the whole deal with the British corporation included worldwide ports, of which the American ports were a mere 7 percent of the whole, Dubai could easily pull out of the American ports without appreciable economic harm. Yes, the UAE is wise.

But what does this failure speak fir the great democratic mouthpieces in the forms of former presidents Clinton and Carter? Jimmy Carter came out on behalf of the deal right away. I still believe that was a political ploy, but if former President Carter was serious, he certainly was unable to convince Harry Reid or Chuck Schumer of the value of the deal to the State of New York or the United States in general.

It turns out that former President Clinton was working with Dubai to “grease” the deal. It was his suggestion to Dubai to opt for the 45 day period of investigation (that was over- lorded by none other than Hillary). Former President Clinton was paid a wad of cash for a couple of recent speeches in Dubai and he was working behind the scenes to assist Dubai in consummating the deal which is now completely fallen through. Will Willie Jeff have to return any money to Dubai? Don’t count on that. Hillary needs everything she can get for her run in 2008.

Anyway, it seems that the formerly impeached sexual rascal and the super-appeaser-in chief were incapable of using any political clout at all to convince Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer to stop hogging the democratic limelight.

This whole episode turned into a sad case of political one-up-mans-ship. The minute President Bush said he would veto any attempt to kill this deal between two private companies that was approved by the committee that was established to approve such things, not only did the democrats see political opportunity (called “opportunism”) but several small-fry Republicans saw their chance for face-time on Sunday talk programs.

A simple deal that would have turned over control of a couple of terminals at several ports (never whole ports, and never, never complete control) turned into a nightmare of suggested legislation based in Arabic racism and fear-mongering political posturing. Which party could get this deal killed the quickest to get the reelection flyers to tout that politician’s clout in protecting the homeland?

Sen. Schumer was falling all over himself getting Sen. Reid’s endorsement when a junior Republican had already placed the deal on the slaughterhouse floor and a Republican Senator had already attached an amendment to kill the deal to the same bill that was to fund the soldiers in the battlefields of Iraq. They were daring the President to veto that.

Fortunately that political hand grenade’s pin wasn’t pulled. The UAE said they’d had enough of all the political clap-trap and ping-pong playing and they weren’t going to play the fool to the foolishness of Congress anymore. Now, if we ask to park a ship in one of their ports, or we ask their coast guard to keep tabs on Iranian shipping, the UAE would probably be within its rights to send the U.S. a single-fingered salute.

The Congress was never going to set up and complete a review in 45 days. They used some of those days to bash the President and sneak in an amendment to an appropriations bill that of necessity had to be signed to continue feeding and arming U.S. soldiers already in the field. McCain was tripping over Schumer who was tripping over Reid who was tripping over King to see who could take the most credit for killing a private business deal that was economically good for seven United States ports.

The only hero in this whole debacle is the wise UAE which pulled out before the crap reached the tops of their hip-waders.
