DP World/US Ports: Deal Or No Deal?

By RD Larson
Mar. 9, 2006

Just in case you don’t know it, DP World (http://www.dpiterminals.com/dpworld_main.asp) is a prestigious and well-known company that hopes to take over seven US ports. The deal supposedly closed on March 2. This company reports that it has great efficiency and experience in port logistics and is know as a innovative, futuristic company.

In January 2005, DP World acquired the US based CSX World Terminals, the international terminal business of CSX (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2006/02/26/BUGHIHDT5P1.DTL) Corporation one of the biggest customers has been the US military. This $1.4 billion acquisition gave DP World a strong presence in Asia with major operations in Hong Kong and China as well as operations in Australia, Germany, Dominican Republic and Venezuela.

CSX had previously been owned by the Carlyle Group,(http://www.thecarlylegroup.com/eng/index.htm) which includes as its members, (http://www.hereinreality.com/carlyle.html) former President George H.W. Bush, former British Prime Minister John Major, former Secretary of State James Baker as well as current President Bush and family until shortly after 9/11 attacks. This is a growing company in Internet deals also.(http://washington.bizjournals.com/washington/stories/2006/02/13/daily18.html)

Some noted Americans have and still do work for DP World.

David Sanborn, previous executive of DP World was named Maritime Administrator by President Bush on January 24, 2006.(http://www.dpiterminals.com/fullnews.asp?NewsID=39) He will be reporting directly to Norman Mineta, US Secretary of Transportation.

Simon Moore is the Managing Director of Europe and West Africa. He brokered the deal at Constanzia, Romania leading DP Worldinto the European Market.(http://www.ameinfo.com/74602.html)

Make no mistake DP Worldwide has the best security screening equipment for containers in the world. Is not trusting UAE companies to adequately manage our harbors is perhaps an error of racism just a knee-jerk reaction to finding out that it’s UAE -owned business.

Lots of the US is owned by foreign investors.

Now that there’s been a Congressional vote, is there an American company with enough security to step up and manage these ports? What is happening to this country? If we’re in debt because of the war and corruption, I guess the only way to get out is to sell real estate values such as ports and even national parks. Didn’t the Supreme Court just come up about privately own property could be condemned by the government for economic development? (http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/06/24/scotus.property/) There won’t be anything left in the nation we all know and love before the next generation comes along. Shouldn’t we be working on environmental concerns? Human conditions? Transportation Education?

Now about me and my liberal cat. I always end by telling you about my cat. He’s been my cat for ten years. I know you know I have a cat. HAD A CAT. Cat left. He went to work for a foreign family that had rats hiding in their basements. He has done this as part of the worker amnesty program. I admire him. He gave up the American way of life for a third world home in order to make some family have a better life. I say that’s really noble of him. He is missed but I understand his empathy for people that have less. I have empathy also but I think I want to do it as a group project, like a war FOR democracy. That lump you think you see in my throat is really my tongue in my cheek.
