"Body Heat" Starring Joran Van Der Sloot As Maddy Walker

One of my favorite movies of all-time is the sensual thriller, "Body Heat," starring William Hurt and Kathleen Turner. It is a sexy relationship full of twists and turns wrapped around the core of a murder for money. The plot begins when Hurt's character, a hack lawyer by the name of Ned Racine, spots a beautiful woman named Maddy Walker, played by movie newcomer, Turner.

She is so incredibly HOT that even if the dialogue simply read names out of a Florida phone book, every red-blooded male would be riveted on her. It is not surprising that she uses her beauty and charm on Ned to set up an elaborate plot to get away with murder. She "accidentally" walks by him early on in the movie as she leaves an outdoor concert to get some air. He takes one whiff of her and is instantly by her side. We find out later in the movie that she is setting him up to rewrite a will of her rich husband so she can be the sole heir of his estate when Racine screws up the legal document. She is counting on him to do so and he does not fail her. He also stupidly believes that she is falling in love with him, so he agrees to kill her husband. At the end, he gets imprisoned for murder, she gets all the money and winds up on a remote island with one of her lovers sipping a cool drink and enjoying the sun.

What makes the movie intriguing is the way she traps Ned so that he is caught for killing the husband. She continually calls his hotel room the night of the murder knowing he is not there and thus leaving a phone record proving he has no alibi. She makes certain the glasses of her dead husband are somehow returned to the police for evidence further incriminating Racine. She also wires the boathouse with a bomb and when it goes off with Ned shouting, "Maddy, NO!" in front of the homicide detective, it is curtains for him. The police believe that Racine not only killed the husband, (which he did) but, he killed Maddy, too. (which he did not. It was her best friend from high school who was already dead in the boathouse compliments of Ms. Walker's elaborate plan)

After watching the intensive UNEDITED interviews of Joran Van der Sloot, I am reminded of the movie, "Body Heat." Something interesting is going on here. It seems that Mr. Van der Sloot is slowly weaving a web around his buddy, Deepak Kalpoe without even accusing him directly. From snippets of Joran's story, we learn the following information, all potentially damning to the elder Kalpoe brother.

---Joran now claims that Satish picked him up when he was Natalee on the beach, not Deepak. In fact, now Deepak has NO alibi for where he was from the time Joran left Ms. Holloway and the rest of the night because Joran instant messaged him and and there was only one response leaving the authorities with the question, "Where WAS Deepak?"

---Joran also claims that he rarely hung out with Deepak two nights in a row, yet according to his story, Deepak called him and wanted to hang out with him the next night following Natalee's disappearance. When Deepak showed up at the casino and found Joran innocently playing cards, he never talked to Joran about the events the previous night. This left the impression that Deepak was scared and needed some moral support while Joran was normal and involved in a poker game since he was innocent. Clever. Again, the authorities are left with a question, "Why did Deepak seek out Joran that second night?

---The plot against Deepak thickens. When Joran gets the call to come home he never mentions anything to Deepak, but according to Joran that is when Deepak wanted to make up the lie about Natalee BEFORE they even knew she was missing! Question #3 for Deepak: "Why make up a lie before you are accused of anything?" Damning.

---Joran then goes on to say that for the following week he and the Kalpoe brothers would practice their lie to polish it. If Joran says now that all he did was hang out with Natalee and then leave her safe and sound on the beach then the implication of WHO wanted to practice the lie is not coming from him, but from another person in the car that night. Guess who? The suggestion is that Deepak had something to lose and that is why HE came over to Joran's house daily to work on that fictitious story.

---Joran also says he did not know Steve Croes, the disk jockey who claims he supported the lie just to be, uh, "helpful." Steve Croes also claims he did not know any of the three boys. However, Joran suggests that Deepak came to him with a "witness," who was going to defend their story about dropping off Natalee Holloway at the Holiday Inn. Joran says that the exact word that Deepak used when referring to this second source a la Croes was, "JACKPOT!" The implication being that Croes was helping out Deepak. Which leaves more questions, "If Deepak is so INNOCENT, why is he so worried about getting caught and why is he bringing up witnesses who excite him so much? Is this the behavior of someone who has nothing to hide?

---Finally, Joran says he will have NOTHING to do with Deepak or Satish because he feels they have lied in their story about him. The three boys have parted ways. Since Joran is the only one talking right now and he hates Deepak, his former buddy, the implication is that he blames him for having to spend three months in jail. Again, there is no accusation from Joran towards Deepak and his potential involvement with Natalee Holloway that night, but if you listen closely to what he is saying about where to look for culpability, that neon light in Joran's interviews keeps flashing, DEEPAK! DEEPAK! DEEPAK!

So, what are we left with here?

Three possibilities. The first is that Joran is innocent of killing or harming Natalee Holloway in any way, shape or form. His story that he left her on the beach and got the hell out of there because her neurotic behavior was driving him crazy (causing him to even ditch his shoes!) is true and he knows nothing about what happened to her once he jumped into the car driven by Satish Kalpoe.

The second possibility is that Joran left Natalee and Deepak showed up to rape and murder her. He and his buddy, Steve Croes, who had access to a boat, got rid of the body and when they informed Joran about it, he decided to make up a story to go along with Deepak because he realized they would ALL go to prison for what happened to her that night. Now, he is angry that his life and future are being affected so he is going around the world telling his story to free himself up from the entanglement brought on by his former friend.

Finally, there is the chance that Joran is guilty of watching Natalee die that night, either by accident or by force. He does not like all the adverse publicity and like O.J. Simpson who claimed that, "Columbian drug smugglers" killed Nicole and Ron; Joran is suggesting a second alternative to the real perpetrator that night.

He claims he is innocent. So did Scott Peterson, Robert Blake, Michael Jackson and 99% of the prisoners at any penitentiary.

From a legal standpoint, he is not guilty.

From a perspective of fairness, none of us know what happened that night.

From a logical deduction point of view, it is hard to believe that a girl would go missing and the last person to be with her claims he has NO clue what happened to her in the wee hours of the morning. Especially, since that person has admitted constructing lies about the aftermath since she disappeared.

Even though there are some things that Joran Van der Sloot said that made a lot of sense, there is still far too many of his conclusions that leave more than a little doubt concerning his claims that he has no idea what happened to Natalee Holloway. Either he is an incredible liar and a scum bag or he is the UNLUCKIEST person on the planet. If someone came along after him and took out Natalee leaving him to a life of unending explaining to do, he is a person to be pitied. Like Gary Condit, who happened to be involved in an affair with Chandra Levy about the time she disappeared, some men just lack that four leaf clover. Robert Blake goes into a restaurant at the PRECISE moment his wife is murdered in the car outside. Uncanny coincidence? Scott Peterson's story about fishing on Christmas Eve (of all days!) with a wife who was seven months pregnant was a stretch, to say the least. It was cold. He had never fished in the Berkeley marina area before. He had never taken out his boat until that day. He didn't even have the proper bait. His attorney suggested hippies kidnapped her in a van....

Unlucky men. Joran now joins their group. He is screaming he is a victim of unfortunate circumstances and hinting, perhaps, that is was his friend who not only betrayed a young girl that night, but also did him in, too.

Stay tuned. Deepak Kalpoe might be the next big thing on the interview circuit. If we can get these boys mad enough at each other, one of them might tell the real story of what happened that night.

My money is on Satish.
