Mar. 2, 2006 In a remarkable turn of events, Fox’s Greta Van Susteren announced earlier this week that she had hied herself off to Aruba to avail herself of the opportunity to have an audience with Joran van der Sloot, who had agreed to speak with her, face to face and on camera, if she gave him assurances that the taped meeting would not be edited. On February 24th and 25th, ABC’s Primetime featured segments of the interview with Joran van der Sloot which the network had arranged for earlier that week in New York City. The meeting had been edited for brevity, with the unshown sections being reserved for an in-depth (perhaps 20/20?) special which is slated to be shown nationwide in late April or early May. (http://www.useless-knowledge.com/1234/uk_news/article122.html In a brilliant move that was guaranteed to attract the maximum number of viewers possible, Ms. Van Susteren intimated that the interview had been strongly opposed by the parents of the young Joran in a pretaping, one-hour parent-son discussion, and that the son had finally requested that his parents leave the room prior to the interview taking place, with only a trusted teacher from Joran’s former school, the International School of Aruba, being with him as the audience took place and the questions were asked. That teaser may turn out to be the marketing ploy of the year, as the boards were soon abuzz, with many wondering if the young man had the street smarts and aplomb to handle a face to face with the one person, lawyer Greta Van Susteren, who has been so strongly supportive of Beth Reynolds Holloway-Twitty and the HMI misinformation campaign since the Natalee Holloway story first broke on the entertainment networks in early June. Greta! Talk about the lamb lying down with the lion (and Fox could be one of the largest contributors to a damages pool). Was this going to be a disastrous fiasco, with Joran coming across as a willful, headstrong, teenager who was determined to get his moment of glory in the limelight, ignoring the cautionary advice of his lawyer father, schoolteacher mother, and undoubtedly his own in-Aruba lawyer? Well, well. Not so, not so. Breeding and brains will always win out! In a one-two punch (more about two later) both Greta and Joran surprised their viewers: Greta with a series of intelligently posed questions and probing responses to his replies; and Joran with replies that demonstrated his humility, humanity and general, all-around decency. Joran is a poised and polished young man, perhaps annealed in the crucible of the firestorm directed against him and all that he held dear over the last nine months, but it is obvious that this is not some stumbling, inarticulate, dumb kid who was first-time lucky on the edited ABC interview. Part two of Greta’s interview will be aired tonight; however, if I had started a lawsuit against this young man on the premise that he would be a pushover in the witness stand, I would be seriously rethinking my options and perhaps considering the moving of some of the donated funds into offshore accounts (Boycott Aruba, lol). ------------ About the author: Dayo Gould is a frequent visitor to Aruba, and is a volunteer ESL teacher in a Christian school.
