Don Knotts - One Very Truly Funny Man

By Michael John McCrae
Feb. 26, 2006

There will never be another Don Knotts.

I grew up with “The Andy Griffith Show” and my funny bone’s interest wasn’t in Gomer, or Goober, or Otis, or Aunt Bea. It was focused squarely on Officer Barney Fife and his interaction with Sherriff Andy Taylor.

Don Knotts has passed at the age of 81 after a stellar career of comedy. Andy Griffith was quoted shortly after his passing saying “Don was special. There’s nobody like him.” And no truer statement could have been voiced.

Mr. Knotts would never be mistaken for any other comic. He had a very unique stature, facial features and voice. He could be imitated, but in his own creative style Don Knotts could never be equaled or surpassed.

The “Deputy” with one bullet in his shirt pocket helped the Sherriff thwart every criminal who tried to take advantage Mayberry’s country folk. Don Knotts said he didn’t mind being remembered that way.

But his career spanned 50 years of radio, theater and television. He made several G-rated movies that were right up his genre, including: “The Incredible Mr. Limpet”, “The Shakiest Gun in the West”, “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken”, and “the Apple Dumpling Gang”.

Don Knotts was a television staple. He had many guest roles and talk show appearances. He worked with comedic greats Steve Allen, Luis Nye, Bob Hope and Lucille Ball. His role as Ralph Furley in the very popular “Three’s Company” in 1979 introduced Mr. Knotts to a second generation of viewers turned fans.

A “special” man indeed, the unique Don Knotts will be missed.
