Supreme Court To Rule On Partial Birth Abortion

By Kaycee Nilson
Feb. 23, 2006

This week, On Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, the Supreme Court with new Chief Justice John G, Roberts, The Chief Justices heard the docket of cases that will be heard this fall. Included in this docket is the case of Gonzales vs. Carhart. This is an appeal of a lower court ruling that declared unconstitutional the Partial-Birth Abortion Act of 2003.

So now we have before us a case that is turned into two questions, Can the government regulate abortion in the way that it might harm the health of some women? And which' opinion deserves greater rate in deciding that this abortion procedure is needed, member of Congress or the medical experts who testified in court?

So will this overturn the "Roe vs. Wade" case? Will women loose rights this fall? I hate politics more than the next person. But when the federal government is going to regulate what a woman is going to do with her own body, then what was the Women's Movement about? Are we going back to the less pay for equal work? Take away our rights to vote in America again?

I feel that if the birth of the baby is going to harm the mother, then it is her decision on what to do, not the government's. But for many children, they are born unwanted and languish years in orphanages. Adoption is an option for many women, but what if giving birth costs the mother her life?

That is a decision that only the woman and her doctor can decide, not the Supreme Court.

Again I feel that the decision is going to be made by the Supreme Court and then we are going to have women back in the dark ages of the 1950's where the majority of women kept themselves busy by keeping house and having kids.

Or worse still, we women will loose our rights to allot of things that where fought for us by other women that came before us.
