Ports For Sale Or Lease

By Ken Hughes
Feb. 23, 2006

First allow me correct a pervious error, its CITGO not CITCO however Hugo Chavez is still the proprietor. Three of the six major Oil refineries and retail outlets in America are owned by foreign interests. B P Oil Company, Britain. Shell Oil, Holland. CITGO, Venezuela. Chevron is a Multi National Group. Conaco Phillips, American. Marathon, American. The rest of the contents from a barrel of oil are converted to plastics and fertilizer by Formosa Plastic Group, Taiwan. Not even the schmuck who leases the Gas station and collects the money is made in America.

About the only American hands that touch oil are yours when it comes out of the pump. Of course there are all those plastic trinket made in China and sold at Wal_Mart if they count.

America in fact the world is being held hostage by the oil producing countries. Sixty percent or better of the world’s economy depends on oil. It’s as essential to our daily lives as sun and water. Rest assured all the political pandering isn’t going to change anything. Both Democrats and Republicans will make a lot of noise in the end it’ll be business as usual. To much depends on the statuesque being observed.

There’s such a thing as retooling required when major changes are made. Our politicians aren’t about to visit the expense of reconfiguring the way American industries do business.

The port situation is a misnomer being used as a political ploy by both parties. There’re in excess of 30 of our major ports being operated by a dozen foreign companies. America doesn’t have a major domestic port facility operated by an American company.

When the fighting stops and the dust settles, you’ll see nothing’s changed. Just a few hurt feelings and a few more meaningless laws passed by congress. If we want to change things we must change congress. There should be a 12 year limit on congressional service. Then let new fresher minds serve. Of 300 million people I don’t except we can’t do better.
