Feb. 22, 2006 Man! Just when I was really stacking up the cord wood against Jimmy Carter and his schmoozing of America’s enemies; his appeasement of terrorists and his Chavez and Cuban celebrations, he goes and puts his support behind President Bush for the Dubai Ports Deal! What is wrong with this picture? In the article: “Carter backs Bush's stand on seaport-operations deal” (subtitled) “Former President Jimmy Carter downplayed criticism of White House support of an Arab-owned company's purchase of a major seaport-operations firm.” By Lesley Clark (lclark@MiamiHerald.com) I find out that the former Appeaser In Chief “…downplayed fears that the deal poses a risk.” The Former President is quoted: “''The overall threat to the United States and security, I don't think it exists… I'm sure the president's done a good job with his subordinates to make sure this is not a threat.'' Now my skepticism is rampant. Jimmy Carter, who has not failed to criticize the Republicans to boost his own failed legacy, is suddenly accepting of a deal that is economically sound and productive for America….but…… Is seemingly extremely destructive politically... And that is what I believe Mr. Carter’s motivation is. He knows that the very impression we are about to give our enemies an open door to American terrorism will be extremely damaging to the hopes of further Republican gains in the Congress and judiciary. I will admit I am in a quandary. I trust Jimmy Carter about as much as I trust Osama Bin Laden. They’ve both been using the same talking points lately. I do trust the Arabs to do whatever it takes to make a buck. I would also trust that once they owned the ports in question that none of those ports would ever come to any harm to avoid major and continuous scrutiny from the CIA or the FBI. You have to remember that even if the ports are owned by Arabs they will not be governed by Arab law. This is American property and American laws and rules will apply. And don’t for a moment think that the Unions that work these ports will jeopardize their Union pensions and kickbacks by allowing the Arabs a deliberate attack against America. Yet, politically, the whole situation sucks. If the deal falls through the British are stuck with the ports and may start cutting corners to save money. They might even allow one or two of the ports to fall into bankruptcy to avoid losing all the ports. If not a sale to the Arab company that is already a proven success, then the ports could conceivably end up in the hands of Halliburton! You know…..that company formerly led by Vice President Dick Cheney. (Yes, I couldn’t resist that!) And, Chuck Schumer said that would certainly be okay with him! So we are torn between two terrors. The Arabs owning American ports and Jimmy Carter saying that’s cool! That electric combo is enough to make me scratch my head and then scratch my butt in that order. The whole deal has become a crap shoot and the President has said he will veto any attempt to scuttle the deal. You do remember that Britain is our greatest ally. Yes, yes, the UAE hasn’t exactly endeared itself to us since 9/11 but neither have any of their currently owned ports produced any appreciable terrorist incident or scare. Let’s ask ourselves if we believe ourselves capable of fending off another 9/11? There has been plenty of gainsaying at the expense of the Bush Administration about NOT IF, BUT WHEN the next attack will occur. So many are sure the bad guys will get in another good lick. Who was it that said: “keep your friends close, but your enemies closer?” Are the voices crying for the scuttling of this deal suddenly exposing the racist hatred they’ve been harboring against anything Arabic? I thought we were only battling against the more radical elements of the Arab world? Are we ready to tell the Arab world they can sell us oil but don’t even think you can do any other business in America? Seems like a real conundrum! Now, I would think all the Democrats would be behind this deal. This is a deal that, should it produce a terrorist opening and subsequent attack would most assuredly be the smoking gun the Democrats have been seeking with which to kill the Republican dominance of government. I believe Mr. Carter sees that and is probably hoping that. But can the Democrats take the chance on another Bush “rope-a-dope”? If the deal is completed and it brings additional prosperity to the port cities and the Unions, the Democrats could possibly lose another of their staunchest supporters, the Unions. Any way you look at this deal you will not see the whole picture. I believe the voices against the deal are currently the loudest. The President hasn’t been able to make his case for all the leftist and scaredy-cat-rightist caterwauling and there isn’t a sane economic brain in the house capable of explaining why this is such an economically good deal for America.
