Bush's Stake In The UAE Port Deal

By Michelle Malsbury
Feb. 22, 2006

Amid the growing controversy over the sale of 6 sensitive US Ports to the Dubai based Dubai Ports World I wondered what's in this for Bush? He has been adamant in stating that if Congress attempts to scuttle this deal he will veto their laws and proceed as planned. Why the hard line?

I did a little digging and found the following. John Snow, the Bush Administrations Treasury Secretary was CEO of CFX a company recently bought out by Dubai Ports World in 2004 for $1.15 Billion dollars. And that's not all. David Sanborn who was named by the Bush Administration last month to head up the Maritime Administration under the Department of Transportation was a top executive for Dubai Ports World in charge of Latin American and European ports. Coincidental? I don't think so! (www.usatoday.com article by William Welch dated 2/21/06, "UAE firm a player in industry increasingly run by foreigners")

Bush said "Why should a Middle-eastern company be held to different standards than a British company?" The answer to this question should be crystal clear! Bush further stated that the "UAE is a close ally against terrorism". Say what? Many hijackers from 9/11 used the UAE as both a financial and operations hub. (www.startribune.com, repost of an article from the Washington Post dated 2/22/06 by Jonathan Weisman and Jim Vandehei, "Amid security complaints, Bush stands by port deal")

Congress is asking for 45 days to review this deal. Which I believe is a very good idea. This deal was quickly and quietly passed by the CFIUS, or Committee on Foreign Investments in the US, which happens to be a small, clandestine, 12 person committee made up of the Bush Administrations cabinet members and White House officials with no input from Congress. Dubai Ports World is headed by Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayen who was educated at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. He is also the top advisor for Shiek Mohamed bin Rashid al-Maktoum who controls this company through state owned Ports, Customs and Free Zone Authority in Dubai. (www.usatoday.com)

William Welch (2006, article for USA Today) said that according to Dubai Ports World they already operate in the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Germany, Djibouti, India, China, Malaysia, South Korea, and Australia. Isn't that enough? I say we write or call our people in Congress and the House of Representatives and tell them to keep up the good work to block this deal! I don't doubt the qualifications or capability of Dubai Ports World, but I do doubt their potential integrity (more like lack thereof) in helping us to keep our ports secure.

Lastly, if Bush really blocks their (Congress) legislation, ignoring our valid concerns in this sensitive issue, and ramrods this deal, then we need to ask Congress to impeach him (Bush and Cheney) and move our Nation toward more secure borders, ports, rails, and air! Viva the right to free speech!!!
