Outsourcing Our U.S. Ports

By Michelle Malsbury
Feb. 18, 2006

Yesterday while watching CNN News and then later while reviewing the exact circumstances of this ridiculous proposal via the internet I was shocked to find that the Bush Administration has worked a deal to outsource six of our most sensitive ports to the UAE! (CNN News, Friday, February 17, 2006, Lou Dobbs segment and http://www.dawn.com) What are they thinking? Or perhaps a better question might be are they thinking at all?

The six ports that are currently under contract to the UAE are those in New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Miami, and New Orleans. The company that has been approved for this contract is a Dubai based company with a lot of experience in this area and the sales price is $6.8 Billion dollars.

Senator Schumer voiced concerns along with three other Senators and three members from the House urging the Secretary of the Treasury to please reconsider this venture. Schumer said that while the Dubai based company may be qualified and capable this would be an unwise partnering post 9/11.

Senator Coburn of Oklahoma said that to give the keys to our ports to a country that has aided the Taliban is not a sound move.

Representative Fossella of New York added that we should not allow control of our strategic assets to be controlled by foreign nations that have spotty records on the topic of terrorism.

National Security experts say that these ports are key points of vulnerability and that their worst fear is that a nuclear device might be shipped from overseas and set off at one of these crucial ports.

UAE has also made no secret about wanting to be free trade partners with Iran. The Washington Times criticized this venture by saying “Do we really want our major ports in the hands of an Arab country where Al Qaeda travels and wires money?" The Bush Administration has been noticeably tight lipped about this partnering. Scott McClelland, White House spokesperson, said that this deal has progressed through all of the appropriate channels including the National Security CFIUS, but refused to offer anything more on this hot topic. Why so silent? Could it be that they feared the reprisals? I say shame on this Administration for trying to sell our sensitive and vulnerable ports to the highest bidder! We need to control all of our ports, rail systems, and air travel here at home! Our nation should not be for sale just because we happen to be up to our eyeballs in debt and have seen the worst trade deficit ever in the history of this nation. What we need is competent leadership and this Administration falls sadly short!!! Please write or call your local Congress-people and/or Senators and let them know that America says no to outsourcing our ports to the UAE!!! Invite them to vote to impeach President Bush and Vice-President Cheney!!!
