Feb. 17, 2006 I try not to laugh when someone says the NBA All-Star Game is a showcase of the world's greatest athletes despite a dearth of whites that makes the All-Star Game look like an NAACP convention. If a white sports reporter made this statement, he would be roundly (and deservedly) condemned for gratuitously injecting race into a sporting event. Bryant Gumbel, an African American, made this ridiculous statement on HBO's "Real Sports" that has received almost no publicity: "I try not to laugh when someone says the winter Olympians are the world's greatest athletes despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention." Bryant Gumbel, who is often derided for his "white bread" personality and demeanor, must have been desperately attempting to gain some "street cred". Note to Bryant: If the athletes in the Winter Olympics are as white as the snow in the ski slopes of Torino, it's because most of the Winter Olympic sports are popular in countries with very few blacks. NHL spokesmen are constantly having to explain to reporters why their sport is so lacking in diversity (unlike the NBA) and how they're working hard to change things. There is no conspiracy to keep blacks from the Winter Olympics or the NHL, idiots like Bryant Gumbel should be more worried about why so few African Americans attend colleges and universities.
