The Political Implications Of The Abramoff Scandal

By Jack Lepiarz
Feb. 16, 2006

The Democrats are calling it a Republican scandal. The Republicans are calling the Democrats hypocrites. Both sides have a point, and neither side is telling the whole truth. In other words, just another day in Washington.

Democrats have repeatedly tried to tie Jack Abramoff to Republicans, citing his friendship with Tom DeLay and the amount of money that he gave to various Republican leaders. Republicans do not say that. They tie Abramoff to Democrats, citing a number of influential Democrats who received money from good ol' Jacky-boy. Democrats do not mention that either. When it comes down to it, both sides are correct. It is true that Democrats have received money from Abramoff, but by sheer numbers, this is largely a Republican scandal. Abramoff gave twice as much money to Republicans as he did to Democrats. The Republicans are the chief accomplices, but that does not mean that Democrats should be let off the hook. Everyone involved with Abramoff ought to be punished. Some more than others, depending on how much they took -- after all, I'm not worried if somebody took a hundred dollars from the man. That's practically nothing in the world of politics. However, people who took upwards of ten thousand dollars from him ought to be impeached.

Now I understand that my approach is a little harsh, and very "black vs. white." However (and I have said this before), I have no patience for those in our government that care only about getting re-elected. Hopefully, this scandal will reveal just how many Democrats and Republicans are corrupt. I hope this will show extremists on both ends that their party is not God. Each party has its faults. Each party has its redeeming features. But both sides do have a significant level of corruption and apathy. Too many politicians nowadays care about getting re-elected and pleasing their constituents.

Let's come together as Americans -- not Democrats or Republicans -- and pledge to eliminate the stench of corruption from our government. Let's make politicians be honest by making their private records public (hell, if they can do it to us, we should be able to do it to them). All in all, let's see the bigger picture and stop this squabbling about who is responsible for the Abramoff scandal, and let's do something about it.

And by that, I mean November 2006, when I will proudly cast my first vote -- one that I hope is for someone genuine, and not a politician.
