Feb. 15, 2006 The Internet is a freewheeling enterprise, any Joe Blow can set up a soap box on the Net and disseminate his opinions to a world wide audience. As an opinion columnist for a small town newspaper I reach thousands, but as an editorialist for a couple of Web sites, I reach many more. Thanks to the Internet the news is no longer the province of a few major media outlets, anyone can spread his version of the news online. Totalitarian regimes like China can't abide the freedom that the Internet symbolizes, they censor what their citizens can see online. Internet giants like Yahoo and Google have adopted the motto, "When in Rome do as the Romans", they have collaborated with the Chinese government's censorship of the Internet. Internet companies are supposed to exemplify freedom, but the human rights group "Reporters Without Borders" accused Yahoo of unconscionable complicity in the Chinese government's human rights violations. "We have so many cyber-dissidents in jail that we are trying to get out of there, and knowing that some of them are in jail with the help of Western companies is really frustrating," said Lucie Morillon of Reporters Without Borders. According to "Reporters Without Borders" Yahoo's Hong Kong division provided information about Li Zhi, a blogger from China who was sentenced to prison for subversion after posting comments online condemning government corruption. Yahoo may live by the motto "When In Rome..", but in good old United States we can't abide cowards who collaborate with evildoers. If Yahoo does not apologize for its complicity in Chinese censorship, I will delete my Yahoo messenger and Yahoo e-mail account. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes has written over 200 articles for Useless-Knowledge.com.
