Feb. 8, 2006 Last evening I watched an interview on PBS television (PBS News, February 7, 2006) I thought I might share with you some of his not so candid replies. The interviewer asked some tough questions. Questions we all would like to have answered. However, Cheney hid behind National Security and dodged most of the more difficult ones. Much of the interview went like this- A question was asked about the unauthorized wiretaps. Cheney's reply was couched such that he absolutely guaranteed that the Bush Administration was proceeding with the utmost caution and prudence in this regard. When pressed further he said he could not go into detail. The interviewer then asked about why the Bush Administration had not briefed Congress and the Senate about these unauthorized wiretaps. Cheney dismissed this question as having too many people to brief. He added that no administration would brief all of the people. I wondered why this was the case. Do any of you also wonder why they (the Bush Administration) would not ask some opinions of their cohorts? Because they wanted to do so covertly!!! When asked about the Presidential right to take such gross latitude Cheney said that he had worked for many administrations and that all presidents have taken such liberty. I don't think this is at all the case. Next they meandered into the Iraq war topic and how the Bush Administration felt about Iran. Cheney said he would be careful to not draw any conclusions on this topic, but offered that the Bush Administration had reached a point that is shared by the UN that Iran is problematic and needs some immediate attention. Further into the questions about Iran the interviewer asked if this particular situation was more aggravated than was the situation with Iraq. Cheney said that Iran had been offered a "deal". They (Iran) had promptly rejected the "deal". He (Cheney) said that their enrichment capacity has shown that there is no doubt about their intentions. The question was begged about Iran sponsoring terrorists. Cheney said that other governments are concerned and that no military options are off the table. That the Bush Administration is pursuing the diplomatic solutions, but will do whatever it takes!!! Does this sound a little bit like the build-up for another war? Touching on the progress or lack thereof in Iraq Cheney resolutely said that progress had been made in 2005. He mentioned that 2005 was a turning point for the people in Iraq with regard to elections and the drafting and adoption of a new constitution. He claims that all requirements their (Iraq's) have been met. However, we have never been made aware of their requirements. Can anyone tell me what their requirements are? The death toll continues to rise, insurgency continues to rise, our deficit with regard to this ill-conceived war continues to rise-is this progress to you? When asked about the basic infrastructure in Iraq Cheney said that it was sorely lacking, worn-out, and needed up-grading under the rule of Saddam. Hence, Halliburton to the rescue-no bid contracts into the Billions of dollars! Cheney sidestepped that issue and said that Halliburton was rebuilding the power grids and refineries in Iraq first. That the US troops are giving security training to the people of Iraq. That all things are better, but I wonder for who? The final two questions came back to domestic issues and asked about the "No Child Left Behind" program. Cheney said that the government has increased funding for this program and he feels it is a success. Statistics about this program differ hugely!!! Lastly, when asked about how this administration fares as far as being good and able managers Cheney said that he is pleased with this administration. He said that they (the Bush Administration) consistently make good, solid decisions. I wondered at this point what types of drugs he (Cheney) was on or was he so cloistered that he had no earthly idea what this administration had really been up to. I mean get real!!!
