"Touched By An Angel" Is Touched By Censorship

By Kaycee Nilson

I recently got an email from a dearly beloved friend, and I have to admit that it was scary because part of it is true.

Anyone remember when we had school prayers? Thanks to Murray O'Hare, an atheist, who successfully managed to eliminate the use of Bible reading from public schools a few years ago, no longer can school children pray or spend “Quiet Reflection” on their religious beliefs.

So much for freedom of our religion or any other constitutional right we the People here in the United States of America have. Why even one of my favorite shows has now been taken off of the airways by the Federal Communications Center, you know, those lovely folks at the FCC? Well, they took the show off for using the word "God" in every episode. (GASP! How dare they? The name of the show is and was "Touched By An Angel" but we can’t mix religion with nothing anymore!)

Land of the free and home of the brave indeed! Next thing you know, we will have to change our currency because of the phrase “In God We Trust.” It’s on the back of every dollar bill in currency we have. So our first amendment right gives us the right to freedom of speech and religion. Even if you are Atheist or any other religion, you are allowed to practice what you wish. Be it Aetiesm, Native American, Catholic, Southern Baptist. Religious beliefs are not to be debated. We Americans, proudly support our troops and our Olympic Athletes, but when a show is taken off the air, I get more riled up than a one-legged man in a butt-kicking contest.

You know what else is funny? NASCAR seems to be the only televised sport that an invocation is still given. I remember the out roar in Texas over a prayer said at a High School Football game.

I fully believe that our children earned their right for a “Moment of Religious Reflection.” I know from my own experience, when I was in school and mad, my anger melted after we had a “Moment of Religious Reflection.” My school did this after the lunch periods and it would stress-free the Algebra and Physics classes I took!

It’s a good thing that this censorship came after “Sonny & Cher!” I’m surprised that she got away with the Bob Mackie gowns she wore on that show!

What are they going to censor next? Imported coffee? Imported beer? BAH, the government makes me so mad. They censor our music and our religious beliefs and now what are we? Too stupid to turn off the show if we find it offensive. You watch, the currency we currently use is about to be changed too, and that’s not all, I bet they will stop using the bible to swear in witnesses at trials.

Mark my words and this column and $2.00 will get you your favorite coffee (before it’s banned!) at your favorite coffee shop.
