Did It All Ad Up; Super Bowl 2006

By Judy Ramsook
Feb. 6, 2006

There are some events that can bring people together regardless of their conflicts with each other. It could be a natural or man made disaster or more recently a certain sporting event known as the Super Bowl. The final game of the season that will decide which team will emerge victorious. As we all know now, that team turned out to be the Pittsburgh Steelers and congratulations to that team.

Initially, I had no intention of watching the game; no Texas teams were in the contest, but since fellow columnist Ken Hughes, was kind enough to email me wishing me a happy super bowl greeting, at the same time, I thought well, it wouldn’t hurt to take a look. Especially for the sake of the ads or even the halftime show for that matter.

On a similar note, I have always heard people say that if you want others to pay closer attention to your ad, employ a celebrity in it. With that came former Star Trek star, (no pun intended) Leonard Nimoy in an ad for Aleve as he did his alien hand signal for some of his enthusiastic fans.

Next came Burger King which employed girls dressed up as ingredients who literally threw themselves on to a burger. As I was watching the ad though, something dawned on me. That something? Instead of having mentioned girls dressed up as ingredients, why not have the girls toss those ingredients onto the burger without hurling themselves for the cause. Otherwise, does cannibalism come to mind?

Then came the Budweiser commercial with the revolving wall. Pretty creative I might add, as some persons will go to great lengths ro preserve their stock of the beverage for as long as is possible. Or at least prevent one’s cronies from finding out where one keeps his stash of the brew.

I don’t recall seeing a Coca Cola ad, maybe it was aired when I stepped away from the television, but I do vividly recall the Pepsi one, with the record producer who ends up dancing to the tune at the end. Back in the nineties I also recall a certain Pepsi ad which featured the late Ray Charles and the Aha Girls. That was impressive too.

At halftime came The Rolling Stones with Mick Jagger singing the all too familiar, Start Me Up, and ending off with that favourite, Can’t Get No Satisfaction, no wardrobe malfunctions included. I have not kept up with most of The Rolling Stones’ music, but I have to hand it to them for withstanding almost five decades of having what it takes to stay successful in the music business.

All in all, it was quite a family friendly SuperBowl event that went well, especially with Aaron Neville performing the country’s National Anthem topped by a half time show in which seasoned professionals, The Rolling Stones, also put on a good show. On a personal note, I guess, sometimes it takes some professionals to show some younger persons in the music and entertainment business how it’s done. Congratulations again to The Pittsburgh Steelers for claiming the highly coveted Super Bowl Trophy for this year 2006.
