Feb. 2, 2006 The President spent considerable time giving credibility to Medicate, Medicare and the state of healthcare in general. When a government official says we must do more for everyone except [white males] I’m inclined to ask why. What is it about the elderly, women, children, and minorities that qualifies them for special treatment? Politicians buying votes with government entitlements are concerns. But not my immediate concerns. The medical profession by way of the pharmaceutical companies has created a drug addicted society the government feels compelled to support. Truth be told most of the so called afflictions of people are induced by advertising. People see a new one of these paid public service advertisements by, [The Society to Prevent [Whatever]]. and immediately make an appointment with their family doctor to see if they have it. The doctor tells them they don’t have what they saw on television. Gives them a prescription for a placebo and tells them to come back when the next designer disease show’s up on television. I can’t stand to be around old people their such a bunch of whiners. The new thing with those over 65 is knee and hip replacement. If they sit on their asses at the Senior Citizens Center and play bingo their bound to get stiff knees and hips. Bingo is neither a good investment in health or wealth. It’s a scam the churches came up with to finance some project or another. I’m always impressed when I see a senior citizen working at a Burger King, Home Depot or any of the many national chain stores. One store I shop at has a woman in her early 90’s passing out those samples of things we shouldn’t eat. I ask her why she works and her answer was, “Because I can.” That’s an attitude more old people need to have. Feeling sorry for yourself only make you a sorry person. Each new affliction has an organization behind it. The society to prevent the spread of whatever. The 99th biggest killer in the world, we know there’re only 98 biggest killers yet we insist we may have whatever it is their preventing. These not for profit foundations are usually founded and funded by the companies who create and supply the medication that cures whatever. I’m not a cynic [maybe I am.] It just seems to me there’re entirely too many new diseases to cope with these days. I also question the new drugs that cure these new illnesses. Doesn’t it stand to reason if we didn’t know about the new diseases there wouldn’t be a need for all the new drugs. Another thing when they advertise these new drugs there’s always a disclaimer. Don’t take this drug standing up straight, drinking water or breathing. If you do they may kill you. I ask you what kind of a drug is that. And why the hell has the government voted to spend billions paying for these drugs. We know the answer to that it’s buying votes. Overall President Bush’s State of the Union speech was an impressive platform for Republicans to run on this fall. I was very impressed when he challenged Democrats in Congress to go to work and stop bitching. It probably won’t happen but it will make good sound bits for the coming congressional campaign advertisements. He gave us the speech about less government and holding down government spending. Every President I can remember has made that same speech and it never happens. There’s something about Washington DC that makes men forget reality and go over to the dark side. It takes an impressive president and a willing congress to make changes in how government works. It’s doubtful President Bush will be able to influence congress over the next three years. Their attitude will be the public good be damned we have elections to win. There seems to be a disregard for the public good these days. Not just by elected officials, manufactures of goods and providers of services but by the general public as well. We seem to have become self absorbed demanding instant results. Demanding the impossible be made possible immediately. Like the designer drugs people demand they demand a designer life style as well. Somehow delivered to them by their government forgetting they are the government. What they get they pay fore in spades. ------------ About the author: Ken Hughes joined the Republican Party at the age of three.
