Feb. 1, 2006 What is it with State of the Union Addresses? Far from being a state of the union they are a list of governmnet programs an initiatives the President wants to waste tax dollars on. He wants an initiative for science. If teachers just did their jobs and taught, and we actually demanded that children learn we wouldn't think of making it Washingtons responsibility to make sure kids learned math and science. Stop using our classrooms for social experimentation and this country will see a lot of improvement in education. Want another way to spell Ethanol? R-I-P-O-F-F. This is just an earmark for agricultural states so their farmers can get more in the way of federal subsidies. If we want energy lets increase the supply of oil and lets get over our fear of nuclear power. It was odd to hear President Bush talk about cutting spending. It was down right laughable to hear him brag about cutting $14 billion from the budget. Is that all? Instead of eliminating programs we need to eliminate whole departments. After all, with all the new spending Bush called for these cuts won't really matter. I have it always found it a little insulting when people say that without immigration we wouldn't have any economic growth. American workers are the most productive on earth. I think we can manage just fine. Calling for a guest worker program was particularly disappointing. Call it what you want it's still amnesty. Countries with large numbers of foreign workers aren't exactly great economic models. Look at Saudi Arabia for example. What we need on our border is a wall and real enforcement of the laws. Not that the speech was all bad.I especially liked his talk to the Iranian people. It was rather reaganesque. Everyone sneered when he called the USSR and evil empire, everyone except those stuck behind the Iron Curtain. The Iranian people know who the real bad guys are, and despite the rhetoric of Hugo Chavez and Cindy Sheehan, they don't work out of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Bush's defense of the NSA monitoring was outstanding. This is a loser for the democrats. Ask Americans if they want monitoring of terrorists and you will get a resounding yes. Instead the democrats want to kill the Patriot Act, except Ben Nelson. If more democrats were like him I might think of them as real Americans. Our choices later this year are between ar party that wants to enable terrorists by killing the Patriot Act, thinks Iraq is a lost cause and we should turn it over to some strongman, and their only strategy is to give up. Or a party that wants to hunt down terrorists, recognizes Iraq is going our way and keep up the fight. Not really that hard of a choice is it. President Bush is right in calling for making his tax cuts permanent. Cut taxes and the economy grows. It's pretty simple. Instead, I am willing to bet that the democrats and some RINO's will do their best to let the tax cuts lapse and give the American people a massive tax hike. It's amazing that being against human cloning is somehow being against science. To many this is the new frontier where all of our diseases will be cured. We don't know that, and secondly we can cure diseases without cloning. Once we start down this road there is no turning back. Life, once cheapened, is never marked up in value. We have been treating human life cheaply for years and are reaping the whirlwind. It is time to stop treating human life as a disposable commodity. President Bush was right to call for a ban on Human cloning. It might be the future, but that doesn't mean anything. Eugenics was once the future as well. How about something on Sam Alito? It is really quite sad that an eminently qualified judge, confirmed unanimously in 1990, was threatened with a filibuster and confirmed by a narrow margin. It's plain, that as far as democrats are concerned, qualifications don't matter. They are trying to hold onto the judiciary. It's the one place where they have any power, the place they can push their far left wing agenda and not be answerable to the voters. So far we've gotten two excellent jurists on the bench. Let's hope we get a couple more. ------------ About the author: Craig Chamberlain has written more than 100 articles for Useless-Knowledge.com.
