Hamas Wins For The Good Or Bad

By Ken Hughes

Will Hamas Soften Their Stand On Israel

Hamas has been put in the uncomfortable position of having to create a new nation from chaos of there own making, with leadership comes a responsibility. It was much easier when all Hamas had to do was criticize the apposing Fatah Party. Hamas has taken on a grave responsibility. If they chose to continue the confrontation with Israel they’ll lose in the long run. Hamas knows in a full scale war with Israel they can’t win. It also knows they can’t rely on any other nations not even those who’ve supported their terrorist tactics will come to their aid with more than lip service. The Israelis aren’t about to surrender to a band of murdering thugs. The world will not support Hamas if they continue to incite terrorist attacks on the Israelis. Not because most of the world supports Israel rather because of their own image being tarnished by approving such cruelties.

Iran the most likely Palestinian supporter isn’t yet in a position to go head to head with Israel. We Americans dismiss those from the Middle East as rag-heads, dot-heads, etc. Not realizing they have a four thousand year history of occupation and confrontation. Conflicts between Jews, Arabs, and Persians the cousins of the desert, the sons of Abraham are centuries old. These lands only became independent in the 20th century. These lands have been occupied by everyone from the Carthaginians to the British. Now that the time and the opportunity has come for self-rule, will they be able to manage it? Only time will tell.

What are the chances Hamas will set aside their hostile attitude toward the Jews and continue the negations for Palestine to become an independent nation? Who in the west will step forward to assist in negotiating a peaceful settlement between the Jews and the Palestinians? Perhaps it’s time for the rest of the world to say enough is enough and let them settle their differences in their own time in their own way.

This is a conflict America shouldn’t take sides in. The Israelis are capable of defending themselves provided theirs no outside interference. The question is can Hamas reign in their more militant members, will they reign them in?

Why Did Hamas Do So Well In The Elections

Unlike Fatah, Hamas has provided Palestinians with food medical treatment and schools. All of their efforts haven’t been as terrorists. [One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter.] While Fatah [aka] PLO has been playing at governing the territories, West bank and Gaza Hamas has actually been governing in the eyes of the average Palestinian. That’s what counts in the end public support if Palestine is too become an independent nation. It’s time for the rest of the world to give some breathing room to the negations. It’s a process that’s been going on for four thousand years what’s a few weeks or months more or less going to matter?

Democracy Is A Long Difficult Learning Process

Democracy as defined by American standards is not the same around the world. What we’ve come to take for granted after 220 years others will have to learn through trial and error. The free world shouldn’t expect all the dots to be connected in the beginning. The free world shouldn’t expect emerging nations to fall in lockstep with their brand of democracy. The best America can do for these new nations is to be there for them, advising when ask and observing when not ask.

I deplore terrorism let’s hope Hamas does as well. If I were asked I would give Hamas an opportunity to prove they can move over from past actions to govern and create a new nation out of centuries of disillusionment and despair. A new Palestine isn’t going to be found at a drive up window at Mickey_D’s. It’s going to take time and effort. I say give it to them. Let the past be the past until it becomes the present and the future. Then there’ll be time to deal with it. We should wish them well and pray for the best.
