Supporting Our Troops Is Always The RIGHT Thing To Do!

By Patrick Hurley
Jan. 27, 2006

A writer for the Los Angeles Times, Joel Stein, published his opinion yesterday that he does not support our soldiers in Iraq because he does not support the war in Iraq. Simple logic, flawed conclusion.

His reasoning is intriguing and controversial. Stein believes that anyone who opposes the war in Iraq but says, "I support our troops there," is a using the wuss mentality of politics. He believes that if you are against the war, you need to be against the warrior.

He is not only creating a national stir, he is wrong.

An American soldier swears to defend and protect his or her country. That is their oath. That is their job. What does Joel Stein expect these military enlistments to do? Go AWOL? Start hanging out with Al Qaeda? Drink some hot cocoa with the insurgents who are bombing the hell out of us over there?

President Bush was elected to lead this country. This leadership may include sending us into battle with any enemy he perceives to be a threat to our national security. If you do not like his decisions, there is a simple way to deal with that: Do not vote for him or his party the next time there is an election. But, taking it out on the men and women who swore to uphold our constitution and their Commander-in-Chief is unpatriotic. They are soldiers who are following their orders. If we listen to Joel Stein, not only will our leaders have to agree with him, but there will be anarchy in the ranks of the military in order to follow his logic here. That would not only devastate the concept of, "fighting forces," it would also make a mockery out of any chain of command beginning with the White House and working its way down through the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the military complex and finally, to the individual soldiers themselves.

We would no longer have a President who would possess the power to lead our nation and we would also not have an army, navy or air force to service it.

Maybe his real name is Osama Bin Stein. Or Osama Bin Stupid.

Our men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan, and in hot spots all over the world and in training here in the United States are, for the most part, American heroes. They risk their lives and sacrifice their hearts, minds and souls to ensure that people like Joel Stein has the freedom to write whatever he wants.

He needs to remember that the next time he pulls his endorsement of not just our President, but our fighting men and women as well.

Because if he lived in Iraq or Afghanistan, no one would have ever heard of him.
