Google And The Red Chinese: The First Government Control Of The Internet

By Ken Hughes
Jan. 25, 2006

Reuters News reported that Google is working with the Chinese Government to develop an internet protocol restricting internet use by Chinese citizens. The Chinese Governments main targets are blogs, chat-rooms, and e-mail services no doubt news will be next. This is inline with a call from the UN and the European Union for the same or like control over the internet the most significant tools for the dissemination of information in the history of the world.

There’ve been a number of us writing about this problem for some time now. It’s one of those issues that doesn’t excite most people. The common feeling is it can’t happen to us. If Google can work with the Chinese Government where can’t they work? Google has just given the finger to the United States judicial system by refusing to cooperate in an ongoing investigation. Google is probably the only company that can refuse to cooperate with the government and get away with it. Their power exceeds that of any major corporation and many governments of the world. What’s to prevent Google from controlling political parties or from destroying political parties they disagree with. If we’re to acquiesce to the whims of a Google or any identity who’s power is absolute. Where are our freedoms, if the government has no way of curtailing their power then who?

I’m sure for Google it’s just business as usual. I doubt they’re looking down the road to the consequences of violating people’s rights to freedom of expression. I doubt they understand one day it will be their rights that get violated if they participate in curtailing information now. We see the results of greed over good judgment all around us. The American consumer opted for cheaper imported goods sold in mega markets such as Wal_Mart at the expense of their neighborhood merchants. The purchasers of automobiles chose imports over domestically produced cars. Now the American car manufactures are compelled to provide jobs to produce cars rather than produce cars to guarantee jobs. If the public would connect the dots they would understand their purchases effects their jobs more than they know. This instant results orientated society isn’t a salutation to long term problems the public will face very soon if things don’t change.

This country’s in need of younger brighter minds in congress. The country needs to insist on term limits of 12 years for anyone elected to congress in either house. What the country needs is more cooperation between management, labor, and government not more regulation and more laws that are forever circumvented with impunity. The country needs to see our elected officials less on television and read more of their accomplishments. Congressional proceedings should never be reduced to Reality T V Show status.

This isn’t an indictment of Google. They’re doing what their allowed to do under the law. The fact our government seems to be complacent in Google’s endeavor says more for the problem than what Google is doing. Our Government [congress and the president] signs off on all foreign trade agreements before they can be implemented. Where’s congress when it comes to restricting a billion people’s rights to freely communicate with each other?
