We're Winning The War Against Terrorists

By Dan Shanefield
Jan. 18, 2006

Pearl Harbor woke us up about the Tojo-led Japanese threat, and the 9/11 attack woke us up about Muslim extremists. It's a worldwide war again, but this time we got ourselves into the winning mode very fast. We haven't had a single terrorist explosion in the U.S. since 9/11. That's an amazing success, considering the fuzzy-boundary nature of the present war. Sure, there have been railway explosions in Spain and England, and Islamic extremist murders and in Holland and France, but not here. Sure, there have been explosions in the Middle East, where there are so many crazy extremists, hiding among the innocents and ready to kill themselves, but not here.

If the very-liberal Kerry and Edwards lawyers had won the election, I'll bet they'd have released a lot of the Guantanamo Bay prisoners for "lack of complete evidence," and we'd now be having big explosions in tunnels and crowded stadiums, pretty often. Liberals never understood guerrilla warfare, where the guilty are not wearing uniforms and can easily hide.

What President Bush did was attack 'em before they attack us. We conquered Afghanistan, even though Alexander the Great and the U.S.S.R. failed to do that. But we have fantastic technology and brave soldiers, with bold leaders, so we did it. We conquered Iraq, where the world's second largest oil reserves could have financed the purchase of longer range Scud missiles from China (after the UN monitors eventually would have given up and left). Iraq had terrorist training camps preparing legions of crazies to infiltrate and blow us up, but we got 'em, before they got us.

Our usual rules of justice, designed to protect the innocent where most people really are innocent, simply can't always be followed in a Jihad war like this, loaded with disguised suicide bombers, who think they are going to heaven when they kill dozens of civilians at a big funeral. We'll have to do a lot of spying, recording of e-mail, and other things we don't like doing. We need a Supreme Court that understands modern realities. But there have not been a whole lot of ordinary U.S. citizens being accused because ol all this. The innocents being hurt have been the people blown up by crazies in other countries.

We live in a new world, with readily-obtained explosives, lots of people who believe they'll go to heaven if they kill us, and easy transportation (maybe too easy!). We just can't maintain all the old ways of life, and I hope our liberal news media will wake up to this fact.
