Jan. 18, 2006 “Skulz” has been indicted by a grand jury, charged with the murder of the lovely young Taylor Behl. You might recall my pieces on the missing women a few months ago. One case solved, through the help of ex-girlfriends and others. But we have heard nothing at all about the Julie Popovich case in Columbus, Ohio. The internet is strangely silent about this case. To refresh your memory, she was the young co-ed, a model, who disappeared from a Ohio State U. campus hangout and was later found dead in a field near the Hoover Reservoir. A young fellow jailed on another rape charge was a strong suspect, but then the data stream came to a crashing halt. The police said they had no significant suspects, and by golly it appears they were telling the truth. I had hopes they had some suspects and were investigating under the radar. It appears to be a cold, dead case at present. There ae two major possibilities: Either the already-arrested young man is the murderer and has decided there is no evidence and all he has to do is clam up-—nd he has clammed up. OR he’s not the murderer, in which case the murderer is still at large. The boy friend has, it would appear, been cleared through having a sufficient alibi as to his whereabouts. We do know that there have been several unsolved murders in the Columbus area over the past several years, so a serial killer is possible. If so, he’s a pretty accomplished one, and one who doesn’t kill so often or so indiscriminately that he risks being caught. The Popovich case may be a long time in the solving. On the Natalee Holloway case, the data stream continues to flow at a rate of several sverdrups. However, it is a stream that consists of continuous recycling, and the water has become so polluted with rumor, innuendo, name-calling, and general debris that it is useless in getting closer to solving the crime. To repeat, the Aruba police and government so thoroughly botched the investigation in the first few days that there was never a significant chance to recover. It was like being behind by 10 touchdowns in the last 2 minutes of the game. One notes that the Equus Search folks are back and looking in some underwater areas. Back to the old “body in a fish trap” theory, I suppose. After so many months, that seems likely to be a fruitless endeavor. But the Holloway case has its passionate groupies, and it won’t die of neglect any time soon. I worry about the Popovich investigation, however, as it appears to have dropped off the radar screen at the end of the earth. Do what you can to keep it open. I promise to mention it once in a while. ------------ About the author Brooks A. Mick: Physician, still practicing medicine but retired from the US Army.
