Jan. 8, 2006 West Virginia State Representative Shelley Moore Capito, states that she sent a letter to a fellow Republican lawmaker, asking him to hold congressional hearings on the Sago mine disaster s in Upshur County this week. Ohio State Representative . John Boehner, chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee. Boehner said he would not schedule any hearings, because he didn't want to interfere with the investigation by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration. There are twelve dead miners in West Virginia. The one survivor is has a long road to recovery. The families will want to know who is the culprit. The public will demand mine-safety action Congressional or otherwise, the investigation that is sure to follows will reveal safety measures that were put on ignore would have prevented the mining accident. Indeed there will be findings that the mining tragedy could have been prevented if certain safety measures had been implemented. Citations will be issues to the mining company. Folks in upper management will get a slap on the hand and the heads of a few lower level mining employees will roll., Eventually, the Good Old Boy System will prevail and a few of mea culpas, it will be business as usual. It's a dirty dangerous job but somebody has to do it. West Virginia Nursing Homes are typically short of staff. One Certified Nurse Aid will work a 12-hour shift and be required to bathe, feed, change and turn up to 30 residents or more. Often, there will be a shortage of supplies needed to care for the residents. If she falls short of legal standards, she is vulnerable to accusations of negligence . She faces humiliation and possible loss of livelihood. Nursing Home owners wring their hands and bewail that they can't find good employees. Where is the attraction. It is long grueling hours of hard work with unrealistic expectations. The working poor are bashed at the expense of the elders. The Good Old Boy System assures that the Nursing Home Owners have no responsibility for the problems in Nursing Home and keeps the profit margin in their pockets. Last year, A West Virginia Courtesy Patrol Driver was hit by a car and killed while he was assisting a stranded motorist. These drivers are usually required to work 12 hour shifts and frequently are called to work uncovered shifts on their days off. Drivers of 18-Wheelers would face legal consequences if they drove the kind of hours that Courtesy Patrol Drivers do. Driving is an activity where it is required to have one's wits about them. It is a challenge when a driver is in a constant state of exhaustion. Nevertheless, the operation is funded by State Contracts and the Good Old Boys systems assure that bad business as usual is the mode. They just can't find good employees.
