Jan. 5, 2006 Pat Robertson, 700 Club Guru, blames Ariel Sharon’s recent massive stroke on God. This is one example of why fundamentalism gets a black eye from non-Christians, non-believers, and non-fundamentalists. Blame God? Mr. Robertson’s premise for such an observation is that God doesn’t want the land of Israel to be divided. What? You heard it. God doesn’t want peace in Israel; after all it’s “His” land. Do we gather from that premise, God wanted the twelve coal miners to die because He doesn’t care for current mine safety? Did he let the young man surviving the disaster live because the kid was on His side? Did God allow the 130 Iraqis to be blown up today because Iraqis are bad boys and girls? Oh, that’s right, they have a different God. How about the five American soldiers killed? If ever hypocrisy in the ranks of good ol’ Bible thumping Fundamentalism exists, it was quite apparent from the man who speaks for his God. If I were a conservative, a religionist, or a sane man, I would take Robertson out behind the wood shed and give him a good thumping...just for opening his mouth. I really think the guy needs to make some drug connections with Rush Limbaugh. I think a little Xanax would clear up his mind. One perhaps cannot always say that Sharon’s approach to peace in Israel has been popular or appropriate, but he was at least doing “something.” He hasn’t been bilking old ladies out of their money by insisting the 700 Club needs it to continue their less-than-honorable ministry. Sharon made many mistakes and Palestinians paid for many of those mistakes, but he didn’t hide behind a cloak of religious arrogance. For that matter, even our President (I’m choking here) at least offers some, though questionable, understandable explanations for his actions. Robertson is obviously suffering from major brain damage, organic senility, or perhaps oral diarrhea. Whatever his illness is, he should be admitted to either a nursing home or a mental health center. Perhaps he could use some of that money he is bilking to attend a Bill O’Reilly School of Dance. If he is as good on his toes as he is with his mouth, he’ll be doing the moonwalk in no time.
The trouble with Robertson and those that seem to be of his same ilk, is that they want to blame all things that happen in this world on external loci. They want to blame anyone but themselves for their frailties and general screw-ups, which means...hey, let’s blame God. Let’s blame God for Sharon’s illness. Let’s blame God because our President and his cronies led us into an unnecessary war. Let’s blame God for our corrupted political system. Let’s just blame the big guy for everything. Works for me, how about you?
