Jack Abramoff: Another Goat Goes To Slaughter

By Ken Hughes
Jan. 4, 2006

Jack Abramoff is the latest Beltway scapegoat who’ll be lead to slaughter by a shocked congress. Liberals will denounce Abramoff as an evil plague influencing Republican Congressmen while they [liberals] are covering their six’s dumping contributions they received from Abramoff any way they can. Charities seem to be the largest group of recipients for their ill-gotten monies. Abramoff’s been in Washington since the 1980’s can anyone honestly believe congress is just now discovering he’s an influence peddler. Are our congresspersons that naiveté ?

The lobbyists such as Jack Abramoff only operate because they’re encouraged to do so by congress. The Media and Lobbyists have the greater influence over Washington politics. Congressional representative teeter back and fourth on what these two groups are willing to afford them in the way of recognition and substance.

Tom Delay and Jack Abramoff’’s careers will most likely be ruined by these allegations while the rest of the co-conspiring congress go’s only slightly scathed by all these accusations. The men accused are less guilty than the system that allows them to operate unchallenged for so long.

Any American Sportsman knows what a bait_pile is. That’s where a hunter spreads a substantial helping of the targets favorite foods out on the ground. When the critters come up to feed, BAM their hit and taken home by the hunter as a trophy. Every ten or twenty years a Game Warden comes along and declares the bait_pile illegal. Lobbyists hunting for naive unsuspecting congresspersons as their trophies are quite similar in their hunting practices.

They system needs overhauling. There’s a need for lobbying however it needs to be less profitable for congresspersons. No exchange of money or gifts of any value should ever be allowed to be used as bribes for services. Lobbying should be restricted to a single issue or organization by any one lobbyist. No law firm who lobbies congress should be allowed to represent a multitude of clients. Is Jack Abramoff guilty of influence peddling, probably? How many of the 435 Representatives and 50 Senators are guilty of accepting bribes? All I assure you.

Term limits can be accomplished by instituting a new policy for both houses of congress. 12 Years in either or a combination of both and they go home to Kansas or wherever they came from. It works well for Presidents why not Congress.
