Sept. 29, 2005 There has been a problem with counterfeit money, I would suppose, for a long time. But this is obviously becoming more of a problem in societies as technology increases exponentially. Recently I went to a store and chose a few items. I put the slushies and the gum and whatever on the counter and gave the lady a ten dollar bill. It was not to be a simple transaction though. The nice lady was not so nice. She started inspecting the bill. She looked like some kind of detective as she felt and prodded and held it up to the light and looked for this and for that. It was very bothersome. If she had a problem she should say so and deal with it instead of going through all these motions. If the bill is questionable she should confiscate it or do whatever they do and call the man (or the woman), or whoever one calls. Finally I said, ' Is it real?' She said she didn't know. I said I didn't know either. Then she said something stupid (but I could be wrong though it seems stupid to me). She said,' Well you should.' I told her I was not in the habit of inspecting my money to see if it was real or not. I asked her if she went through all her money like that. She did not answer. Then she accepted and gave me some change (in coins). A few dollars Canadian which is, what, a few cents American I suppose, after the exchange rate. I asked her if I was suppossed to inspect it to see if it was real. She said no and not to worry. I wish she had given me a bill. I should have sat there holding up the lineup, twisting it this way and that, holding it up to the light, himming and hawing. Now I could be wrong, but I didn't think everyone was suppossed to inspect their money. I don't know anyone that does. And these stores usually have machines to check. Espescially these big chain gas stations like the one I was at. This chick probably cheaped out and didn't want to pay for the machine. Thats fine but don't turn around and give me a hard time about it. I just wanted some bubble gum. ------------ About the author: Brian Michael Barbeito lives in Aurora, Ontario, Canada.
