In Defense Of West Virginia

Are there bigots in West Virginia? Of course (our senior senator is one). Are there bigots in the other 49 states? Yes. Do bigots make up the majority of the population? No. (Although I'm sure Claxton Graham or Frederick Smith, or some other left winger will say I'm wrong)

Bigotry is as old as humanity. We find differences and we use them to divide. I have met bigots of every color, size, age, and gender. Blacks who hate non blacks, whites who hate non whites, people that think jews are part of some conspiracy, women who hate men, men who hate women. People that hate others for the religious or political beliefs or hate them because of their ethnicity.

Either way it's all stupid.

Now for some reason West Virginia seems to be one of the countries whipping boys. Hey the state isn't perfect, but the young people aren't leaving because of a drunken idiot who needs liquid courage to spout of with his idiotic rantings. They leave because trying to find work in an over taxed over regulated state is nearly impossible, but that is another column.

Bigots are cowards. That's really all there is to it. Notice if one of these people ever has the courage to stand up by himself he probably has a blood alcohol level two or three times the legal limit. The Klansman never works alone, he and his little jackboot buddies can only go out together and harass people they don't like.

Why are people bigots? Beats me. Buddhists would say it's out of ignorance, Christians would say it's because they haven't truly found Christ, Humanists will say its because they vote GOP. But to stand up as a West Virginian I would like to proclaim that we are not all bigots. Ms. Isaacs column did not make that charge but I feel the need to point it out anyway. We are not perfect by any stretch, after all we keep sending Byrd back to the senate. We might have our prejudices(I think all people have them, and it's not the same as bigotry. I'm prejudiced in favor of fox news over cnn, and the Yankees over the Red Sox. I don't think that makes me a bigot)

But when it comes to the real bigots, those who hate people for generic reasons (or really any reason at all) it is best to just forget about them. They really aren't worth paying attention to.
