Sept. 29, 2005 He must, I read in his article, "Most Liberals Have It Figured Out", that Liberals like himself have been "licking their wounds." Figuring that the only wound he can lick from where his head is stuck would be to his intestines, I conclude that he has serious internal injuries. Mr. Levine says the Liberals are "getting smarter now" – I wonder what evidence he has of that outlandish statement. Am I mistaken or are Liberals not in the midst of a popularity decline unseen in any party for over fifty years? Jimmy Carter was the last true Liberal in the White House – and he got the boot after one term. You’re back to FDR looking for another Liberal. Is this their "smart" strategy – drive away all but their most fervent followers? Have you tried to find a Liberal lately? I’ve been chastised twice recently for mistakenly assuming someone to be a Liberal. It seems that if it looks like a Liberal, sounds like a Liberal, and smells like a Liberal, you better not call it a Liberal. Is that the Liberals "smart" strategy – make your followers pariahs in society? He says that Liberals "are the ones that are finally speaking up for the population." The population of San Francisco, New York, Boston, and perhaps, a few other bastions, but no where else. How does he figure otherwise? How many Liberals have won election anywhere but in those metropolitan areas? I could probably amputate some fingers and still count them with my shoes on. Please, Mr. Levine, tell me who these Liberals are, that speak for our population here in Texas. I’d love to see them on a street corner in downtown Houston or Dallas, spewing their message, and see how many of the population they speak for. My guess would be that they would be complete ignored by almost everyone, and assumed to be a mentally deranged homeless person, or some other head case. The chances of a throng gathering because they sooooo identify with his message are nil. I’d bet my child’s life on it. Where are the ‘roughshod’ bruises I should have from being ‘run over’ in that fashion, as you say, by the Republicans? I don’t feel abused. I feel more abused because the drive-in movie across from my house is showing a double feature – "Corpse Bride" and "The Exorcism of Elizabeth Rose" (or something like that) – can’t Hollywood make a nice, intelligent movie anymore? But wait, isn’t Hollywood considered almost totally Liberal? So, is "Corpse Bride" more evidence that they are ‘getting smarter?’ Isn’t Hollywood like a Mecca for the Liberal glitterati? Such that we can imagine our society in a Liberal future by simply examining Hollywood today. To his credit, Mr. Levine, does recognize that politicians are all self-centered powermongers and harbors no illusions that Democrats are free of corruption. And he calls on the true power brokers in our national elections – the moderates – with his plea for support. Only problem: he associates whatever disillusion moderates are feeling in this administration with a lean to the left, and it just ain’t so. Assume, for conversation’s sake, that everyone could be graded on a scale of 1-5, 1 being a Liberal, 3 Moderate, and 5 Conservative. 2 & 4 being, as one would assume, somewhere between those descriptions. Republicans have been winning elections by forming a solid majority with those rated as a 3, 4, or 5. But in truth, a simple majority of Americans would rate as either a 3 or 4. It is that simple arithmetic Mr. Levine’s ‘smarter’ Liberals don’t get. Add together the numbers 1 and 2, and you lose the election. Over, and over, and over. Just like Liberals have been doing. And the stupid idiots keep trying to talk 3’s and 4’s over to their side to no avail, those folks cannot abide the 1’s. If Mr. Levine really wants to get the Republicans out of office, his beloved Liberals should drop out of the Democratic Party and form their own party – like Ralph Nader. They are a definite minority in the party anyway. This would leave the Democratic Party in charge of the 2’s, who would suddenly start looking a little better to the 3’s without that dead weight dragging behind them. Now you have some strength, enough that the 4’s give you an honest assessment – they’re a bit leery of the far right as well. And you win elections. It won’t happen, however because the minority of Liberals run the Democratic Party and their Leadership is loathe to lose the power and prestige of running the second most popular political party. Do not expect them to sacrifice their personal lifestyles for the good of the party.
