Sept. 28, 2005 OK, hypothetical situation - Let’s say that a bunch of nationals started coming into this country from Canada or Mexico, or anywhere for that matter. For this exercise Canada is the best example. Let’s also assume that these people are radical Protestants and feel that anyone that does not share their view is subhuman and not worthy of sharing life on this planet. Now let’s say this group, in order to further their view and illustrate the point, begins a campaign of indiscriminant mass murder, the victims of which for the most part share their faith. They load vehicles with explosives or strap them to their bodies and set them off in crowded places, like Grand Central Station, killing thousands. Sounds pretty farfetched doesn’t it? It would also seem that the citizens of this country would stand for it for no longer than it took to figure out what was going on, right? If our elected officials made no effective move toward the cessation of this wanton carnage what do you suppose would happen? You know as well as I do, the people would rise up and, right or wrongly, attempt to bring and end to the situation by their own hand. That could theoretically occur here and in effect has, on September 11, 2001. There were not many people in this nation that were not beside them selves over that incident. The fact is that the Union was moved to war. Now, people are people and human emotions are the same no matter if you are black, red, or pink with purple polka dots. It also matters little where you locate yourself. True, certain people are a bit more flamboyant than others, those of the romance language country’s come immediately to mind. By the same token there are nations where the populace seem to have adopted a kind of stoic reticence, generally those that have endured hardship of a nature that will beat you down and keep you there if you allow it. Some shrug it off like a warm summer’s rain; the English are a good case in point. Others take it as a matter of course and expect their fearless leaders to make everything right. The former communists block people were this way, they however, are turning around after a number of years of freedom. So where is the outrage in the Iraqi people? The scenario in the opening paragraph of this piece is exactly what is going on over there. Yet other than an occasional informant or volunteers for the police or service, the people just take it. These are very nearly 100% foreign nationals, murdering Iraqi citizens in cold blood by the thousands. Thousands! Why do they do nothing? They know who belongs and does not naturally belong in their country. It’s not like Viet Nam, where even a score card would do you no good. Is it their religion? The same religion that drives people to tie a hundred pounds of C-4 around their waste’s and take as many people with them as is humanly possible? What kind of belief is that? Even the Jewish of Israel, as peace loving and isolationist a nation as has even existed, can and will retaliate at a moment’s notice. No one but the Palestinians are nuts enough to stir that hornet’s nest. Uh…how’s that working out for them so far? Until the people of Iraq stand up on their own 2 feet and defend themselves and their homeland, we are doing absolutely nothing over there but getting killed for a lost cause. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not anti-war. War is just as long as it is for a just cause. I know there are a lot of people out there who will whine that war is never a good thing and yada, yada, yada ad nauseam. Morality aside the fact remains that there has always been war and until everyone on this rock gets that touchy-feely feeling there will always be war. Get use to it. I’m not sure if the majority of the Iraqi people will ever get the picture. After all they sat idly by while a mad man dictator ran roughshod over the entire nation for years and years. Strong evidence would suggest that they will continue this behavior regardless of what force pushes and pulls them through their lives. It behooves me to put forth the notion that what we had better do and the sooner the better, is start an intensive psychological study of the Iraqi people and determine whether we even stand a chance of turning the corner there, or are they going to flaccidly sit there like sheep while a wolf is in the in the flock. If they can not or will not muster the backbone to take the rights God gives to all people and run with them, then I say let’s get out of there. No amount of money will ever give a group of people like that the intestinal fortitude to be real men and women. Let us not forget the lesson of Southeast Asia. That war was lost because the people we were fighting for simply did not care. Period.
