Sept. 28, 2005 J. Krishnamurit A Biography/ by Pupul Jayakar/ 518 pages/ softcover/ Penguin Arkana/ Pupul Jayakar's biography of J.Krishnamurti is perhaps the best Krishnamurti biogaphy available to date. It is easily accessible for the reader who is simply interested in biography or learning about spiritual figures. It has signifigant scope and depth so that the reader familiar with the teachings and writings of Krishnamurti can learn more from the book than previously known. Jayakar knew Krishnamurti, is a good researcher as dates and persons are concerned, and is a talented and capable writer. Krishnamurti was prepared for the role of world teacher by the Theosophical Society. At an early age he turned down the role and set out to simply give talks on his own. Krishnamuti talked and wrote on living, mediation, mind, love, awareness, nature, and much more. Jayakar's book brings one into the context of what was going on during Krishamurti's life, both with him, and with many of those who sought him out. There are fourteen pages of pictures that show Krishamurit from a youngster up until his old age, along with other figures in his life. Unlike many other teachers who are surrounded in controversy due to the fact that they have allowed groups to form around them, so that a guru-worship dynamic might happen, Krishamurti's life has not this controversy. Krishnamurti did not allow a group to form or sit in a high chair giving lectures. He just spoke about his view, and continually said that the listener had to find out for themselves. For this non-controversial reason alone, the book goes straight to an in-depth honest listing of the events as they occurred in Krishnamurti's life, and Jayakar is able to concisely paint the picture of Krishanmurti studying, talking, growing up, travelling, living. The book is extremely well organized, with the regular preface, epilogue, notes, and index, but also with forty-seven subject headings, the majority of them Krishnamurti quotes. These forty-seven headings are divided into six main parts being The Young Krishnamurti 1895-1946, Krishnamurti in India 1947-1949, The Unfolding of the Teaching 1950-1959, The Rivers of Insight 1960-1962, Changing Horizons 1962-1977, and The Summation of the Teaching 1978-1985. ------------ About the author: Brian Michael Barbeito lives in Aurora, Ontario, Canada.
