Natalee Holloway: The Current Fear

By Dayo Gould
Sept. 27, 2005

Meri, my dear, might I be so bold as to suggest that you ask your doctor to run a few simple diagnostic tests? As one of your faithful followers, I have noticed some slight, but still slightly disconcerting, signs of ever-increasing mental slippage and, with the almost daily breakthroughs in modern medication and treatment, the medical professional may be able to restore to you the acuity and alertness that has become so distressingly absent as of late; to whit:

You stated, in “What do you do” on September 21, that you are presently 22 years younger than your 82-year-old author-husband, Richard, which, by dead reckoning, makes you to be a mere lass of 60 years; however, you also aver, in “The media and I” on September 24, that you grew up listening to President Roosevelt on the family radio.

Those were bracing, intellectual broadcasts from one of the world’s greatest leaders (even though he was, and still is, reviled in his own great country, America, as being a Semite-loving, communistic, war-monger).

Sadly, President Roosevelt died in April of 1945; the Fireside Chats aired between 1933 and 1944; his last radio speech, his Address to Congress on Yalta, was aired on March 1, 1945; and, therefore, if you are 60 as you presently infer, then in 1945 you were likely a few months shy of being born, my dear.

Perhaps it was the Fireside Theatre that you were watching--though how you could mistake Jane Wyman for Franklin Delano Roosevelt should also be cause for concern about your mental well-being. If, in 1955, you couldn’t differentiate between a wheelchair and an armchair and if you have let yourself continue, untreated, for 50-odd years, your husband may not have really got that much of a bargain when he went the December-June bride route.

FDR always referred to himself as a tree farmer; he directed the planting of that stand of tulip poplars that can still to be found south of the Library; and all he could then contribute (he was in a wheelchair) was to cheerfully exhort the planters, “Feed ‘em lots of manure, lads. Lay it on right thick!”

Meri, we’re not tulip poplars and I, for one, don’t need to be fed manure, neither lots of it nor little of it.

Now that we’ve put your credibility to the test (and sadly laid it to rest), I must address myself to your latest load of codswallop: your critique of the A Current Affairs interview with Joran Van Der Sloot, that 17-year-old, International School honour student who was also tragically caught up in the Natalee Holloway vanishing.

I saw and heard on television a poised and articulate young man who, as an intelligent viewer observed, “The way he spoke, and carried himself, was so much more honest and impressive than I could have even hoped for. It wasn't rehearsed, it wasn't even angry. He said that NONE of them had sex with her, that he felt bad that he had left her on the beach, but that was the truth, and that absolutely at no time did he ever tell anyone or sign anything saying anything different. He said he lied at first, basically because he thought she was going to come back, everyone had thought she had run away, including Beth... and I believe him. I always have, now I am glad that I was able to hear him speak, and watch the way he carries himself. Anita and Paulus did a fine job, IMO.”

With that televised interview, and the statement that not one of the three suspects had sex with Natalee, Joran has restored Natalee Holloway's virginity and reputation, which have been constantly and continually dragged through the mud by way of the prime-time airing of disjointed and possibly spliced audio tapes and the other on-air antics of her mother, the media-maven-loving Beth Holloway-Twitty. What price fame and fortune, you ask? Seemingly, a daughter’s previously unsullied reputation…and we’re still waiting for the CPAs and money managers to trot out the total take to date in donations.

If the sex on the beach didn’t happen, what did occur after Natalee returned to her room in the Holiday Inn that night? She was seen by a Mountain Brook youngster, she used her toothbrush, yet she vanished from the face of Aruba.

Having seen Joran in this interview, I can well understand why Dan Riehl, at http://www.riehlworldview.com/carnivorous_conservative/2005/07/how_did_natalee.htm, reported, “At least one student on the trip suggests that Natalee, along with (the) other young woman from Mountain Brook were actually quite attracted to the young Dutch boy.”

The impressionable Mountain Brook females may have found Joran to be a great attraction, and the males may have found the attention paid to him to be a threat; however, his European savoir faire and panache do not explain Beth Twitty’s pathological hatred for all things Van Der Sloot.

True, Joran was a threat to Alabama manhood. He did not wear a baseball cap nor have his finger jammed up his nostril as he consumed the proffered belly-shot from Natalee’s bared navel, but that alone can not explain the mother’s 100-odd-day vendetta of vengeance against a proven-by-peers, and now self-professed, innocent youngster.

As, FDR said, "...the only thing we have to fear, is fear itself." During the Great Depression, fear gripped the nation - fear of the present and fear of the future. There is certainly some fear presently gripping the Holloway donation organization. Could it be the fear that the truth might be coming out?

Please, don’t you answer, Meri…at least not until your medical team gives you a clean bill of health.
